Queanbeyan, NSW, based author and visual artist Omar Musa, has been named winner of the 2026 Miles Franklin Literary Award, for his 2025 novel Fierceland. Finally had my first bout with Grimmish! What a remarkable book. It's an especially good read for authors who want to explore Michael Winkler's unusual writing craft.
I absolutely enjoyed the creativity of this "exploded non-fiction novel"...the blend of memoir, writing tips, historical happenings, footnotes, social/psychological commentary and full on made up mischief, mayhem and mess (warning: there is lots of male on male sporting violence in the book).
What's also remarkable is that in addition to the innovation and craft he brought to this book (based on an American boxer's bouts in Australia in the early 1900's), Michael Winkler's dedication to the project...his self-publishing journey - his shortlisting for the Miles Franklin Literary Award and then the publishing deal with Puncher and Wattman is like going twelve rounds in and of itself.
