  2. Despite Meriel Barham leaving Lush due to musical differences, Pale Saints and Lush would often perform together and remain close friends to this very day

  3. Due to a falling out between the 3 surviving members, no original member of Lush (Berenyi, Anderson and Bassist Phil King) has spoken to each other since the end of their 2015 reunion tour💔

  4. James Bond and/or Sci-Fi fans might recognize Miki Berenyi due to her resemblance to her mother Yasuko Nagazumi who played a Bond Girl in “You Only Live Twice” (1967) and Yasko on “Space-1999”

  5. This is “Everlastingly Yours” (youtu.be/fHThQtKdFIw?si=-LtyEo) / NO STROBE (youtu.be/vDO1UDChJBw?si=56Lib1) from London-based shoegaze supergroup Piroshka’s album “Brickbat” (youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK). The band is comprised of Miki Berenyi of Lush, her husband KJ “Moose” Killop of Moose, Elastica’s Justin Welch and Mick Conroy from Modern English. This was Miki’s first foray back in to music after Lush’s 2015 reunion/farewell tour.

  6. Lush briefly reunited in 2015 for a tour and to make the “Blindspot” EP (youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK) before calling it quits for good. A short documentary titled “A Far From Home Movie” about Lush was released this year and it’s currently available on CriterionChannel (criterionchannel.com/videos/lu)

  7. First up, We have British band Lush co-headed up by English multi-instrumentalist & singer-songwriter Emma Anderson and English born Japanese-Hungarian musician & writer Miki Berenyi. “Sweetness and Light” (youtu.be/_hD3MQsXExA?si=IfYIIy) /NO STROBE (youtu.be/1iTpqEsqQMs?si=sloI8W) is from 1990’s “Galal” (youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK) The band called it quits after the the tragic 1996 death by suicide of drummer Chris Acland.

  8. Lush is one of my absolute favorite bands. Miki Berenyi just released an album with her band The Miki Berenyi Trio (youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK) and tbh she didn’t miss a single beat

  9. Miki Berenyi Trio - Tripla

Post-Lush, post-Piroshka, but still mining that dreamy-echo-y sound, with a bit more EDM this time…

  12. #MikiBerenyi #memoir read, finally.

That was a wild ride in the rollercoaster of emotions. Extremely sad climax, tho I ofc knew what was coming, being a long-time #Lush fan.

She writes well. A good ride. Highly recommended – both for Miki’s barbedly hilarious #musicbiz observations and her raw & honest coming-of-age story. Also, many band life related plot-twists & anecdotes weren’t completely unfamiliar to me, good & bad.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see this filmed some day.

  13. I finished #MikiBerenyi ‘s #FingersCrossed .
Its an excellent book, I loved the experience of reading it. I already thought Miki was cool and creative; now I know she’s a person of integrity & sensitivity as well. You enjoy her company as a reader.

I hope it gets adapted into many formats, so her story goes far and wide.

I appreciated that she kept Chris’s death to the end, making it clear that Lush might’ve gone on without Emma, but without Chris, that’s the end of the story.

  14. “As for Gibby, Pete once found himself witness to one late-night hotel room party, where Howard was hoovering up the coke, Al was indulging in loud dirty talk on the phone to a sex worker in Hawaii, and Gibby smashed every glass and bottle in the room, then rolled around in the debris, howling in performative pain. So for all his talk, I’m not convinced Gibby has the sensitivity and application needed to perform cunnilingus to it’s desired conclusion.”

  15. "We witness a great many incompetent but enthusiastically received support acts, which inspires us to have a go ourselves. Emma is donated a guitar by a cousin, and I buy a #Telecaster off a friend, and we practice haunting renditions of #Blondie tunes, plugged into her bedroom stereo."

  16. Miki and #KeigoOyamada are cousins, and that adds an extra level of sweetness to her stories about their shared grandparents.

I feel like we can see the grandparents’ influence on both of them as creative people.

“Evidence of my grandfather’s many hobbies, and obsessive collecting, is everywhere. The hallways and landings are lined with a vast array of photo albums, and a meticulously labeled archive of music cassettes, and the living room is crammed with a crowded display of wind-up toys, marionettes, and timepieces that burst into life on the hour, ringing out a chaotic symphony of whistling notes and synthesized tunes, while model trains clatter along a complex network of tracks winding around the furniture.”

  17. “On one occasion when we fall out, I write Emma a long letter of apology, and buy her a #Eurythmics single as a peace offering. While Maxine notes the generosity of the gift, Emma responds dryly, “I should upset her more often.”

  18. “The relentless promiscuity makes sense now; more than lust or excitement, it was his cure, and proof that he’d gotten over the past.
But love, that was poisoned, because however much he could fuck, he could never trust. An only child, abandoned by his father, and abused by his mother, he had no template for a healthy relationship, just the knowledge that love could turn ugly at any moment, so better to be in control rather than to be the victim. The leaver, rather than the left.”

  19. "In retaliation against the tastefully conservative decor, Emma plasters her ceiling with posters of bands, and buys in a load of spray paints, sample pots, and indelible markers, inviting our gang over to graffiti her bedroom walls, one of which bears the legend "TOILETS ARE DIRTY" in huge green letters.

Dyllis disapproves, of course, but Emma seems to revel in provoking her mother, and concocts bizarre scenarios with which to string her along. She proclaims that she's going to see a band called "The Wafting Farts" at The Marquee, purely to bait her mother into repeating the name, and pretends satanic possession by lying on the floor, glassy-eyed and chanting Latin declensions."

  20. I have to confess, something I was looking forward to in this book was confirming my negative feelings about Emma…. But she’s only just now entered the story and she’s HILARIOUS.

  21. “As the police dust their way around the surfaces of the house, one officer takes in the scattered papers, broken furniture, and general disorder, and commiserates over the wanton destruction perpetrated by the intruder.
My rather downbeat reply is, “Oh, no, it’s always like this.”

  23. “The break from his imprisoned family has at least put Dad in an upbeat mood.
Back on the road, he regales us with a blow-by-blow description of his seduction technique, and eventual, vigorous coupling, along with observations on the looseness of his conquest’s waist and vagina in the wake of pushing out the last of her three children, and a backstory on the tragic waste-of-space she’d married, fortuitously out at work, who was woefully unequipped to meet her carnal needs.”

  24. Today I can get back to sitting still and enjoying #MikiBerenyi ‘s audiobook #FingersCrossed

She is a brave, highly relatable person, and her story is not only important, but engaging. It’s a pleasure to spend time with her.

  25. On one side of the family, there’s a grandmother whose indulgence of the nazis allowed her and her son to survive the war; on the other side, a grandmother who indulged the red army to get her family through the war alive…

…and they spawned a horny Hungarian party animal and a Japanese girl with dreams of glamour…

… who met at the Tokyo Olympics…

and gave birth to #MikiBerenyi #FingersCrossed

  26. “Children do crazy things, innocently.
A normal adult doesn’t exploit that behavior, and might speculate where on earth they’d learned it.”

    #MikiBerenyi #FingersCrossed

  27. She is very brave, the depths of her honesty and self-reflection.

… and this is all looooooong before #Lush .

    #MikiBerenyi #FingersCrossed

  28. “Relying on strangers to provide rescue, because my own parents, though well-intentioned, had no fucking idea how to raise me or keep me safe.”

    I love her and identify.

    #MikiBerenyi #FingersCrossed

  29. There’s so much depth and intrigue in both sides of her family’s history , one can easily envision it as a miniseries!
She paints the characters SO VIVIDLY, not just what they DID, but what they FELT.
