Thanks to history writer and podcaster #MikeDuncan for mentioning Tarleton on the wonderful #RevolutionsPodcast , causing me to say aloud to myself: “Wait, General Sir Banastre Tarleton, 1st Baronet like the tree!?” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Duncan_(podcaster)

This is the interview https://youtu.be/SUUw-UfK64Q , also with historian #MikeDuncan

Well, Mike Duncan has /something/ going on… I don't think this is really what I'm interested in getting from him.

This whole #RomanEmpire trend-thing is slightly depressing, since my favourite #nhl #hockey team is the #OttawaSenators, my favourite book is #GuyGavrielKay's brilliant #SarantineMosaic (set in a version of Justinian's Byzantium), and #MikeDuncan's #HistoryOfRome podcast is one of the several that I cycle between as calming-bedtime-noise (living in the city, I find that putting on a soothing voice speaking in a measured tone helps to drown out other noises much better than a fan or other white-noise does). Stop co-opting all the stuff I like, problematic hetero dudes! 😾

Been sick all week. But I managed to finish reading Mike Duncan’s Storm Before the Storm. It’s a fascinating look at the troubles of the end of the Roman Republic. The violent breakdown of the government process and rise of populist leaders and factionalism.

A good read. Highly recommended.
