    Somebody Might Wave Back

    #TheWaterboys (1994)

"Seven O'clock in the morning and I'm riding the overnight train
I've got ten tonnes of luggage but I left it behind when I came
I look at my watch, says September seventeen
We're riding past some place where I've never been
And I'm waving through the window as we go
Somebody says 'Well, hey, what are you waving at?'
Well what have I got to lose
    Somebody might wave back

Seven O'clock in the morning and I'm carrying bags under my eyes
Been awake all night, counting the hours to sunrise
(Drawing patterns/Beating rhythms) on the tabletop
I lift my gaze and my mouth just dropped
Someone waving in the window at me
And I say 'Hey there, what are you waving at?'
When he says 'What do I have to lose,
    Somebody might wave back'
What do I have to lose,
    Somebody might wave back"

  2. "Well it's got nothing to do with anything that is real you just believe and it's true
It can soothe like an angel or sigh like a saint you can dream it and make it true
But you're gonna have to put away your illusions burn all your beads and your pearls
Turn the other cheek, stay straight a few weeks and get yourself into the world party"

    Original lyrics from #WorldParty by #TheWaterboys (#MikeScott, #KarlWallinger).

  3. Look what turns 40 today …

... This Is The Sea from the British-Irish folk-rock band The Waterboys. Many call it the tops of the band's early "Big Music" sound, which features a mystical and epic style driven by frontman Mike Scott. The album is most famous for the hit single "The Whole of the Moon." 4. The Waterboys, Out of All This Blue, 2017 on BMG

Mike Scott, the creative force behind The Waterboys, has continued to make interesting music and evolve their sound – here incorporating more contemporary pop sounds. It’s a double album, with a third record of “blue variations.” Some of the tracks have lots of instrumentation (strings, brass, overdubs) and some seem to be recorded on the fly with just guitar or piano and drum machine with Scott singing solo.

Among guests, there some fiddle via Steve Wickham (who played the violin on “Sunday Bloody Sunday”), brass and string arrangements by Trey Pollard, and bass from Patterson Hood’s dad David Hood.

It’s a big sprawling three record collection but I love it. Still so much talent!

My copy is the 3xLP Deluxe edition, via Crossroads Records in Portland OR.

  5. Fun fact: #MikeScott of #TheWaterboys is my cousin on my maternal grandfather's side. I can totally see the resemblance -- both physically and politically! 😉

  6. #BuryMyHeart by #TheWaterboys

"Wrote by #MikeScott after reading #DeeBrown's book. Originally intended for the first #Waterboys album it was inexplicably left off and only appeared subsequently on the 12" single of The big music."

    "We're God's chosen people
This and other truths I know
    Put them into vicious practice
Because the bible tells me so
And I drowned the noble savage
    In the blessed holy water
    I burned his filthy village
    And I civilized his daughter

    The liars in this world
Who say we shame the blood of Christ
    But killing is his mercy
    And nits grow into lice
And all those gooks I napalmed
Man, I did it in God's name
When the fools put me on trial I shouted out
I'm not to blame -- I did it for him!
    I did it for him!

    I did it for him!
    He made do it!
    He tore the heavens apart

    Bury my heart!
    Bury my heart!
    Bury my heart!"

  8. “World Party’s” 1985 Origins

The Waterboys’ Mike Scott Explains the Meaning Behind Their Late ’80s Hit “World Party”

by Al Melchior, March 13, 2024

"While #Live Aid was not as topical by the time The Waterboys released Fisherman’s Blues, a version of “World Party” had actually been written in the summer of 1985, just shortly after Live Aid and after the band’s previous album, This Is the Sea, had been completed. A demo for the song is included in The Waterboys’ 2024 box set 1985, which includes recorded and live performances the band produced along the way to making the final version of This Is the Sea, as well as a remastered version of the album. While “World Party” didn’t make it on to that album, you can hear the demo on the fifth disc (of six) of 1985.

The Relationship to Karl Wallinger’s World Party

The late multi-instrumentalist Karl Wallinger, who passed away Sunday (March 10), co-wrote “World Party” with Scott and Waterboys bassist Trevor Hutchinson while he was still a member of the band. Wallinger left The Waterboys in 1985, and he took the song’s name as the name for his new band. With his World Party, Wallinger would score hits in the U.S. with “Ship of Fools,” “Put the Message in the Box,” “Way Down Now,” and “Is It Like Today?” World Party also recorded a track called “World Party,” but it is a different song than The Waterboys’ version."

“One of the finest musicians I've ever known”: Karl Wallinger, guitarist and singer of #WorldParty, dies at 66

A highly-regarded multi-instrumentalist and arranger, Wallinger was also a key early member of #TheWaterboys

    By Jackson Maxwell
    March 11, 2024

"Karl Wallinger, the multi-instrumentalist and singer best known as the leader of the alt-rock band World Party, has died at the age of 66, his publicist announced today (March 11). No cause of death was given.

"'Karl Wallinger, the Welsh-born musician and composer better known as the singular force behind World Party, died Sunday, March 10,' read a statement on World Party's Facebook page. “Presciently ahead of his time with songs such as Ship Of Fools, Put The Message In The Box and Is It Like Today?, in addition to the magic of She’s The One and the Waterboys' Whole Of The Moon, Wallinger was 66.

"'Karl leaves behind a loving family, including wife Suzie Zamit, son Louis Wallinger, daughter Nancy Zamit, and two grandchildren.'

"A native of Wales, Wallinger took up music at an early age, becoming a proficient multi-instrumentalist – and a member of a number of bands – by his teens. An example of Wallinger's musical eclecticism and versatility can be found in his first prominent gig, as musical director of the West End production of The #RockyHorrorPictureShow.

"Paying tribute to his late bandmate on social media, the Waterboys' #MikeScott wrote, 'Just received this. Travel on well my old friend. You are one of the finest musicians I've ever known.'"

  10. The Waterboys, Bury My Heart

    "Bury my soul
Where the dust meets the sea
Turn it loose in a lonely place
Where man can still be free
Make up my clothes and sheets
In a ball, put them in the ground
    Tell my children only truths
    Teach them to be proud
    Tell them dreams and miracles
    When thy thunder stops
    Bury my heart!

    Bury my heart!

I was born a travelling trooper
But I laid my wings to rest
Once I beat myself in squallor
Now I feather up my nest
There are flags in my back yard
    Colours on my wall
    I pay my servant well
But I made the bastard crawl
And I pretend no blessed evil soul
That I don't hear that thunder start
    Bury my heart!

There's a lily in the valley
Where I brought the news to Ro
I offered him my visions but
    The heathen rose to go
So I took my shining sabre and I slew
    My sinning friend
A christian burial was all he needed
    To make him whole again
And I looked up way above me
And God rent the sky apart
    Bury my heart!

    Bury my heart!
    Bury my heart!

    We're God's chosen people
This and other truths I know
    Put them into vicious practice
Because the bible tells me so
And I drowned the noble savage
    In the blessed holy water
    I burned his filthy village
    And I civilized his daughter

    The liars in this world
Who say we shame the blood of Christ
    But killing is his mercy
    And nits grow into lice

And all those gooks I napalmed
Man, I did it in God's name
When the fools put me on trial I shouted out
I'm not to blame -- I did it for him!
    I did it for him!

    I did it for him!
    He made do it!
    He tore the heavens apart

    Bury my heart!
    Bury my heart!
    Bury my heart!

    Now I'm going to wilderness
On a horse that I can trust
I will die where I fall
    In the hot dry dust
And if you come to that place
    Remember this truth

That he who's born to property
Is he who's born to lose
    Will you bury my soul
Where the dust meets the sea
    Will you bury my heart
    At Wounded Knee!
    Bury my heart
    At Wounded Knee!
    Bury my heart
    At Wounded Knee!
    Bury my heart!"

  12. @Efneal We need more gleeful interaction! I think of the Waterboys' 1984 song, "Somebody Might Wave Back."

    Somebody might wave back..."

  18. This is an adventure of a song and the lyrics are compelling. I can't decide on which ones to quote as all of them are integral to the story.

I could have chosen virtually any song composed by #MikeScott as he has such a creative mind. This one however is one of many stand outs for me within #TheWaterboys back catalogue.
