  8. ORG has long warned that the botched UK eVisa scheme could create another Windrush scandal.

Flawed data and systems can corrupt a person's immigration status, especially as there's no offline way to prove it.

  9. ORG collaborated on a recent report that revealed the emotional harm caused by digital immigration status.

Migrants are reliant on a faulty system to prove their right to live and work in the UK, which costs them greatly in their daily lives.

  10. This year, ORG exposed the harms of the UK eVisa scheme ⚠️

Errors and glitches in this system have left migrants unable to prove their immigration status.

ORG calls on the Home Office to provide physical proof to alleviate anxiety.

  11. "The [UK] Home Office failed to assess the risks that a digital-only [eVisa] scheme brings, particularly for those who are vulnerable, older, or disabled. It is also misleading in its assessment of the scheme as digital by default.”

  12. People have found inaccurate personal details on their eVisas, including photos, names, visa end dates or even passport numbers.

The glitchy system has left people unable to prove their right to work, rent, study, travel, or access essential services.

The ICO must investigate the UK eVisa scheme.

  13. The UK eVisa scheme has unravelled with avoidable consequences to the lives of migrants.

One thing the Home Office can do is to introduce a secure physical backup that's accessible offline in the event of digital system failure.

  14. The botched UK eVisa scheme needs to be investigated.

The Home Office failed to assess the risks of a digital-only scheme. As a result, migrants have experienced widespread data errors, inaccessible design and technical failures.

  15. The open letter also argues that the UK Home Office failed to assess or mitigate:

🔴 Risk of face images being used for matching, automated checks or shared with third parties that may combine them with other datasets.

🔴 Risks to people without smartphones or who are digitally excluded because of disability, their age or socio-economic reasons.

🔴 Risks to people subject to partner coercion.

  16. The UK eVisa scheme has been riddled with data errors. This represents a huge breach of sensitive data and a system failure.

Migrants are prevented from proving their legal status and locked out of accounts with little Home Office support.

They can't prove their right to work, rent, study, travel or access services. The DPIA should have identified and mitigated these risks.

    #dataprotection #gdpr #evisa #immigration #migrants #migrantrights #ico #ukpolitics #ukpol #homeoffice

  17. "“In its DPIA, the [UK] Home Office failed to assess the risks that a digital only scheme brings."

“If the Home Office had identified some of these risks [of the eVisa scheme], migrants may not have experienced the same levels of distress and hardship that we have seen over the last year."

"The Information Commissioner's Office must investigate.”

  18. The UK Home Office can take immediate steps to reduce the anxiety that migrants are experiencing.

Migrants need the safety of a physical or digital back up so they can prove their status in any circumstances.

Write to your MP to stop the eVisa scandal ⬇️

  19. The UK eVisa scheme is a digital-only system that checks immigration status in real time.

The DPIA is misleading. It claims eVisas are part of a 'digital by default' transformation that people can choose to use.

But it removes all physical documentation and users can't opt out of digital methods.

    #dataprotection #gdpr #evisa #immigration #migrants #migrantrights #ico #ukpolitics #ukpol #homeoffice

  20. The UK Home Office has failed migrants.

The eVisa scheme is founded on an incomplete and misleading Data Protection Impact Assessment, meaning foreseeable risks were not mitigated.

ORG has brought together 19 civil society groups to call on the ICO to formally investigate the resulting data protection breaches and accessibility issues.

  21. The UK eVisa system is beset with problems.

New research highlights the human cost of these hostile digital systems that are flawed by design.

Root and branch reform is needed as the government intends to rollout digital ID to everyone in the UK.

  22. The UK eVisa scheme is the Windrush scandal on repeat.

Bill C-12 is the successor to Bill C-2, the so-called 'Strong Borders Act,' which was introduced in June by the federal government. Bill C-2 was rejected by over 300 organizations from across Canada, for whom this initiative posed a threat to human rights, refugee and migrant rights, and privacy of all residents of Canada.

  31. CW: UK politics; petition against introducing digital ID cards

    Hey folks :FediverseSymbol:

In case you haven't already seen, the petition on the petition.parliament.uk against the introduction of compulsory digital ID cards has reached ~1.7 million signatures at the time of us writing this post ✊

Do not introduce Digital ID cards

If you're a British citizen or UK resident, please kindly do consider signing this if you haven't already done so :PleadingFaceWithRedHearts:

This isn't some "good faith" effort by the government: it's patently being done for nefarious reasons, including:

    • Infringing upon the human rights of migrants (both documented and undocumented) and asylum seekers, and making their lives even more difficult.
    • Further eroding the rights of trans+ people within the UK by embedding either a binary gender marker (urgh!) or "sex" (urgh!) assigned at birth flag on there.
    • Giving the state greater surveillance abilities and powers of the lives of everyday citizens, particularly the poor, the marginalised, and any dissenters.

If nothing else, the recent £1.5 billion GBP "strategic partnership" that the UK government has formed with US company Palantir should raise serious alarm bells over data privacy, data security, and data protection

Update 2025-09-29: The petition is now past 2.4 million signatures, and still rising.
