Besides Mint I've also been trying Kubuntu. For the most part I like it... except for the snaps. Snaps/flatpaks are a windows-like idea in Linux, and I've been struggling with it.
Initially it didn't bother me. Firefox is a snap on Kubuntu, and it worked fine. The cursor changed color & size when inside the snap window, an update fixed that.
But snaps don't update via the regular software manager. I suddenly got a notification that Firefox is updated, and I need to restart it to use the new version. Or otherwise it will restart by itself in 13 days. What is this, Windows?
I tried to install some electronic id stuff which didn't work on snap Firefox, you needed the regular package Firefox for that. Away with this hell.
In short, not a fan. I can see why they could be useful, but there has to be a better way. This seems to cause more problems than it solves.

Besides Mint Cinnamon, I've also been trying Kubuntu (KDE). The software center has a large number of packages, frequently hilarious together. Bible study or anarchist FAQ, which way linux user?
Also it's been 20 years since I last used KDE, holy moly. I didn't like it that much then, but now this felt like the smoothest, most luxurious ride ever. So many good defaults, it scrolls the way I want to, restores all applications on restart if you want, easy to turn on num lock at start, the mouse movement speed is good by default, so much more. Perhaps too much more, this is definitely not a quiet desktop environment, but it's really slick. I turned off a lot of notifications because they went a bit overboard on those. We'll see whether I end up liking this or Cinnamon more for long time work.

It's been a few years since I installed Linux. It keeps getting better. No trouble with booting or getting the wifi to work. Mint looks a little better again than last time I tried it, it feels very quiet, which is a good thing.
Firefox now has a built-in option to hide the title bar, for those of us who want so gain as much vertical space as possible.
Element is built-in now too. I installed GIMP and it still launches so much faster on Linux than on Windows, very convenient.
Next up is testing some games, a vpn...
