  1. A blast from the past.

"Charles Platt’s 1984 book Micromania (known in the USA as The Whole-Truth Home Computer Handbook) examined the current state of the art in home computers, mingling solidly factual and jargon-free explanation with sardonic exposure of industry hype and lampoons of hackers and other “creatures of the computer continuum”."

  3. 🎉 Wow, who knew the history of #microcomputers was just a parade of unpronounceable names and numbers? 😴 Let's not pretend anyone's life changed with a 20-pound "micro" computer, probably better at launching a spaceship than solving a math problem. 🚀 #Calculators everywhere are shaking in their pocket protectors. 📟

  5. Any hobby #retro #microcomputers magazines that are still being made?
I remember seeing some like 3 months ago but I can't find them.

  7. BTW
there is no reason you shouldn’t have full access to your #computers. there is also no reason whatsoever you shouldn’t install software you’ve developed or is developed by sources you vetted and trust.

this is a post about the (micro)computers in your pockets and purses that are marketed under the moniker of “smart phone”.

    don’t matter if it’s an #iOS #iPhone or an #Android #Pixel: they’re #microcomputers.

we should have full access to and use of their hardware & operating systems.

  9. 🎉 Behold, the tech revolution nobody asked for: #recycling #smartphones into "cutting-edge" microcomputers! 🌍🔄 Citronics proudly reinvents the wheel—literally—by stuffing old phone guts into circular casings. Who knew your dusty drawer of obsolete gadgets was a goldmine for "industrial scale" innovation? 🚀💡

  11. Sundry Sunday: Microcomputers: An Introduction
From Periscope Films, a video preservation group that rescues niche short subjects from destruction and obscurity to be enjoyed by all. Many of their videos are of old army training videos or newsreels or the like, but there's a deeper variety of subject there, waiting to be f

  12. Frank Herbert’s Book on Computers
Frank Herbert, of course, is the person who created and wrote the first Dune books. You remember Dune, don't you? Paul Atreides, Muad'Dib, Bene Gesserit, Baron Harkonen, etc? Notably, in the backstory to his sci-fi epic masterpiece, there was

  13. When I was growing up, my dad was self employed. He was an electrician by trade - the kind that you'd call to fix the installation in your house. At some point - probably in the late #70s - he fell in love with computers and started a repair shop. Eventually he started importing #Z80 based #microcomputers from the UK and started writing software for them. During the 80s he made ends meet by writing tools for formatting disks (there were a million formats back then, some for weird systems that weren't even capable of formatting their own disks) and converting between different obscure word processing systems. These are things we take for granted now, but it was serious magic back then. I don't think he really loved the business part of it, and eventually his business failed. Not before sharing his love of computers with his son, though. It always seemed like he lived in another world than the people around him, but sometimes I got to live there too.

  15. ⌨️🟩 The Tektronix 4051 is a microcomputer from 1975, which, adjusted for inflation, would cost approximately €25,000 today 😮. It features a 1 MHz Motorola 6800 processor, with 8-32 KB of memory, and data can be stored on a "quarter-inch" tape drive with a capacity of 300 KB. Thanks to its unique cathode-ray tube, it can display graphics in a resolution of 1024x780 🤩

  17. OK, promise kept! I've been on vacation the last week so sorry about the delay in posting this. Here's my latest video, where I take a look at the complete game of the C64 port of Contra aka Gryzor!

I brought along a friend that's never played or even seen this version before.

    Check it out here: youtu.be/jTXZwrPIanU

  18. I've been digging into retro computing projects including SAP kits as well as 6502 and Z80 kits along with kits that emulate the Altair but fit in an Altoids tin. Not that time wouldn't be a limiting factor, but I'd need a budget.

    Will need. 😈 #Microcomputers #RetroComputing

Oh, and RISC architecture really IS going to change everything.
Took a minute, but it's starting to.
