  1. I recently read Micro by Richard Preston and Michael Crichton. This is one of those posthumous books of his. This one is complete garbage. It doesn't sound like Crichton, it is very poorly written, and just bad.

From what I understand, this was written based on some notes Crichton wrote on napkins or something and Preston wrote a book based on what little info he had. But to put Crichton's name on this book is a disservice to his legacy.

  2. And here’s another bit from Michael Crichton’s ‘Disclosure’ (which he says is based on a true story), 1st published in 1994, but still feels contemporary in lots of areas; this is part of a longer speech:
“Third, I think that we have an obligation to— a social obligation, if you will— to keep high-paying skilled jobs in the U.S. Other countries don’t export good jobs. Why should we? Each of our offshore manufacturing decisions has been made for a specific reason, and, personally, I hope we start to move them back here. Because there are many hidden costs in offshore fabrication. … we need manufacturing. If there’s anything that the last twenty years has shown us, it’s that design and manufacturing are all one process. You start splitting off the design engineers from the manufacturing guys and you’ll end up with bad design. You’ll end up with General Motors.”

  3. Michael Crichton’s ‘Disclosure’ (which he says is based on a true story), 1st published in 1994, but still feels contemporary in lots of areas. Enjoyed the complicated plot & the product-based manufacturing problem solving. And then there was this:
“As for Meredith, her behaviour didn’t surprise him at all. For years, Sanders had fought the B-school mentality that she exemplified. After watching these graduates come and go, Sanders had finally concluded that there was a fundamental flaw in their education. They had been trained to believe that they were equipped to manage anything. But there was no such thing as general managerial skills and tools. In the end, there were only specific problems, involving specific industries and specific workers. To apply general tools to specific problems was to fail. You needed to know the market, you needed to know the customers, you needed to know the limits of manufacturing and the limits of your own creative people. None of that was obvious.”

  4. Novels read in 2025 (part 3 of 3):

    - #KierstenWhite / The Quiet House - fantasy mystery
    - #MichaelCrichton / Drug of Choice - thriller?

    20 books in 2025, 2 of which are re-read.

  5. Currently #reading a #MichaelCrichton story. Half way into the book, feels like the plot has went 180. A newly introduced character expressed her frustration that she had no idea what was going on, the main character had no idea what was happening, I have no idea what is happening.

  6. I loved Jurassic Park movie back in 1993 but never read the book since I'm so into other genres, but now I'm considering to buy the book and read it before watch the movie again. Should I?

  8. do you ever just read #Foucault and slip into musings abt #MichaelCrichton's book #JurassicPark (1990) and #JordanPeele's film #Nope (2022) on the arrogance of disciplinary precision to shape docile bodies that're so obedient and entrenched in the expectation to gaze upon spectacle (of their own design) that it leads to their own destruction

(would 1000% mention the trex and nope's monster are fem too)

  9. Michael Crichton's Dragon Teeth is an entertaining Wild West quest for dinosaur bones set amidst the war between US Army and Native Americans. Easy quick read, but lacks the depth of his famous books.

    My rating: ★★★☆☆

  10. ...we live in a culture of relentless, round-the-clock boosterism for science and technology. With each new discovery and invention, the virtues are always oversold, the drawbacks understated. Who can forget the freely mobile society of the automobile, the friendly atom, the paperless office, the impending crisis of too much leisure time, or the era of universal education ushered in by television? We now hear the same utopian claims about the Internet. But everyone knows science and technology are inevitably a mixed blessing.
-- Michael Crichton (Science, March 1999)
