  1. #Movies #RichardBurton #MichaelParkinson In the last year I've seen at least half a dozen movies he made in the 1960s. I think they had to tape this at 8am in front of a rapidly assembled audience of cleaners, canteen workers and security guards.

  2. Just unpacked this in our bookshop. If you are of a certain age, you probably have the theme tune playing in your head just looking at this!

  4. Sorry to hear #MichaelParkinson the revered English TV / radio host, journalist and author, has passed. His trusted, unflappable screen persona was cleverly used in two horror films: patronising unhinged horror star Vincent Price with banal questions in #Madhouse (1974) and as the sceptical anchorman caught up in a national séance in the BBC's infamous #Ghostwatch (1992).

  5. Whatever your opinion on #MichaelParkinson, he gets major man points from me for one little thing he did.

In the early 1970s, his wife Mary was having awful problems with oral contraception.

Rather than let her continue struggling with the pill, or losing their joint fondness for spontaneous sex, he had a vasectomy.

At a time of men wrongly thinking women were responsible for contraception, he urged other men to do the same.

Cosmo called it "the greatest gift a husband can give his wife".

  6. #MichaelParkinson as one of the "Big Six" who had been signed up for presenting on the new TV-am in 1983.

The others were David Frost, Robert Key, Angela Rippon, Anna Ford and Esther Rantzen.

  7. Michael Parkinson has died. He had such a gift to let another person present themselves on their own terms. That wouldn't be right in politics, or in many other areas, but in his context it worked and it made the audience think.

There is a Mastodonian element in his approach.
