Since Kamakura times, from August 9-16th, Mibu-dera has performed special dance called Rokusai Nenbutsu (六斎念仏) for Obon.
The religious dance originated from an old belief that demons wandered the land for 6 days of the month (六斎).The mix of religious chanting and frenetic dancing was performed as both a form of proselytizing and protective prayer.
