  1. Mia Mottley, Barbados' Prime Minister, has started making the news again for demanding an end to the US blockade of Cuba.

What's that? Didn't realize Cuba was being blockaded?

So this is one of the knock on effects of the US kidnapping Venezuela's president and corner the country's oil.

No more Venezuelan oil sales to Cuba.

  2. Meanwhile China for the last decade has negotiated simple trade and financial deals that actually materially supported infrastructure that Barbados' citizens actually wanted.

The Prime Minister describes China offering infrastructure loans with 1-5% interest rates and no other geopolitical bullying. Just straight forward trade deals.

  3. Excellent Trevor Noah interview with Mia Mottley, the Prime Minister of Barbados.

Mia presents a very real comparison of what it's like interacting with Americans and the Chinese in geopolitics.

The US in the early 2000s would demand things like exclusion from war crimes punishment and then if small countries like Babados disagreed, immediately threaten to pull US military aid & protection from the region.

  7. CW: Slavery & British Conservatives

In the 17 CE the Drax family under Sir James Drax, was the part owner of (at least) two slave ships, the Samuel and the Hope. The Family owned the largest sugar plantation in Barbados and is credited as being the architects of slavery-based sugar production. The Caricom Reparations Commission has also noted that they had agents in the African continent to kidnap people to work on their plantations in Barbados and Jamaica. When slavery was abolished in 1833 the Drax family was compensated £4,293 12s 6d, a massive sum for 1836.
