The “diplomatic” context of this story is also quite interesting - and the reason for quotes is that I hesitate to use this term against #Putin behaviour:

1. First #Russia denied everything and Russian pumped all kinds of nonsense similar to what we’ve seen in the #MH17 case
2. After a few days Putin reluctantly mumbled something about being “sorry for an accident that happened in our air space” but otherwise Russia consistently denied responsibility and ignored any #Azerbeijan request for investigation or compensation
3. Azerbeijan started stiffening its stance towards #Russia in general - at this point you could see Aliyev was simply puzzled why Putin was unable to do the simplest thing from the beginning - say it was an accident, offer support and apologize
4. In response Russia did the dumbest, but the most Russian thing possible - it took… revenge on Azerbeijan for not bowing to Moscow’s ostensible arrogance. They started arresting Azerbeijani minority all across the country, several of them “died in custody”
5. After almost a year Putin finally mumbled a kind of admission, although it was still reluctant and muddied by speculative nonsense.

As you can see, in Putin we’re dealing with a pathological liar and narcissist personality who can’t say a word of truth even on the simplest things.

After almost a year #Putin personally admitted that it was #Russia air defense that shot down the #Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243. But even that he couldn’t admit honestly, and instead had to come up with lies and muddying the waters:

The reason lies in technical malfunctions in Russia’s air defence system itself. The two missiles that were launched did not hit the aircraft directly; if they had, it would have crashed on the spot. Instead, they exploded several metres away, perhaps 10 metres or so. Perhaps this was a self-destruction mechanism.

This is of course bullshit - the missiles exploded hitting the aircraft tail with shrapnels as expected, but it was a relatively small rocket for the “Pantsir-S1” system with a 20 kg warhead rather than a big “Buk” rocket (70 kg) as the one they used to shoot down the #MH17 flight. That saved the #AZAL8243 flight allowing it to fly in emergency mode and save at least part of the passengers. Putin also did not explain why none of the Russian airports nearby accepted the flight and instead it had to fly to Kazakhstan over the Caspian Sea.

Today at UN Security Council there will be a debate on #Russia drone attack on #Poland from 10 September.

Russian line of argument is easy to predict - just remember what they were showing in July 2014 after they shot down #MH17 - they presented some kind of map, which looked like air control or radar map, which they called “objective control”.[1]

The problem was that their “objective control” map was literally drawn in Paint or something like that with MH17 flight path severely diverted and a mysterious “Ukrainian aircraft” added, because it suited their narrative back then.

In 2016 they pulled the “objective control” map again, but it was… different - the MH17 flight path was different and the “mysterious aircraft” disappeared! It was because by then they switched to another “official explanation” which was of course completely different than in 2014, so they had just drawn a slightly different map.

I remember hordes of excited experts arguing whether the “mysterious aircraft” could have been a rocket or bird or something, and these debates went on for weeks, because nobody really accepted the simplest truth - that Russians blatantly faked the whole “objective control”.

The king was shown naked years later when the DSB asked Russia for raw radar data and they replied… it disappeared. But by then nobody really cared about MH17, because there were so many more exciting Russian war crimes to argue about.

And the radar data was just one such piece - there was endless arguments whether Ukrainian Su-24 can fly up to 11 km, a Mig-29 that would be 4 km long if the Russian “satellite photo” was genuine, some mysterious “captain Voloshin”, less mysterious “air controller Carlos” (a paid worker of RT Spain) etc etc.

So, that’s pretty much the context you need to know prior to watching today’s Russia’s show on UN Security Council.

If you don’t remember the details of 2014 #MH17 shoot down over #Donetsk - here’s the triumphant TV report published by #Russia where they boasted about downing “yet another Ukrainian military aircraft with a rocket” shortly after the Boeing was shot down by Russian “Buk” launcher.

After they discovered it was actually a civilian aircraft, they instantly switched stories and started claiming it was Ukrainian fighter jet and Russia “never had such weapons” in Donbas - totally against what they said just 30 minutes before. Russian disinformation is indeed sloppy, but by the sheer volume of the fakes it’s pumping into public space it achieves it goals, leaving most of the audience simply confused and not trusting any narrative, even if supported by evidence.

At #Poland request the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting to address Russia’s violation of Polish airspace.[^1]

As #Russia had already decided it will go the denial route and started flooding the public space with dozens of contradictory stories (“too small range”, “wrong serial numbers” etc) I can predict that on the UN SC meeting we will the Russian delegation waving some pieces of paper which, as they will claim, “prove” these drones were not theirs and appeared out of nowhere.

The purpose of this disinformation is clear: sow discord and confusion in #NATO, while providing global political elites with a convenient pretext for yet another evasion in the “Russia has no offensive intentions” genre. This is precisely the same scenario as we saw when Russia downed #MH17 from #Netherlands to #Malaysia.

But just as in that case, the very first reaction - by #Belarus - gave out Russians - it was Belarus MOD who in the very morning stated that these were Russian drones that “veered off course due to electronic jamming from both sides”.[^2] We now know that they did not “veer off”, but were intentionally targeted at Poland, but at that moment such hypothesis was kind of justified, especially as Minsk didn’t want to offend Russians too much.
