#WIPWednesday : I'm finally remaking the lace for my colonial cap. I put one of my first lace projects on it before, but I'm better now! And I found a lace that is more period- and region-appropriate.
I think it needs to be a smidge smaller still, so one more iteration to come. But this is fine for now.
I reverse engineered the pattern from this #MFABoston cap.

This is sad to hear. I've always loved my visits to MFA Boston - so many fascinating exhibits. If you're in Massachusetts, consider becoming a member like me - it’s well worth it. #MFABoston #Massachusetts #Arts #Culture #Museums

The Winslow Homer exhibit at #MFABoston is really good,¹ & given watercolors’ sensitivity to light, they only tend to display the collection every 40-50 years. No pressure; it runs through Jan 19.
If like me you dabble in watercolor, nothing can replace in-person. 🎨👌

Good Morning!
We'll continue #BloomScrolling for several days by looking at the Rachael Ruysch paintings on exhibit at #mfaboston This is: Fruit Still Life with Stag Beetle and Nest, 1717 by Rachael Ruysch. 1717 ! Let that sink in. This woman was a world renowned painter and botanist in the 1700s. And, she lived to be 85 when the average life expectancy was 58. #amazing #painting #botany #museum #GoodMorning

Discussion of this triggered the memory of my of my lace group friends, who knew of this "lace or needlework" pattern from ~1720. Dated because it's on the back of a deed in #Boston.
Gosh, I love a rabbit hole through archives.
#MFABoston [and I love that the MFA offers Mastodon link shares] #BostonMA

@auris Reminds me of a piece I saw last year. They used to dress up baby Jesus statues. Red satin and gold lace.

One final thing--not from the Sargent exhibit. Was it @Fredatron who collects paintings with needles visible? I found one yesterday.
The needle with the #flamestitch #embroidery is right there.

A very nice #Chantilly fan was on display. I loved the birds and insects on it. Very high quality work.
Again: "Maker once known".

This cravat was mounted near a painting of a woman with a similar lace around her upper arms. Not the same piece, but nice to see close up similar pieces.
One thing you can't get from photos sometimes is how textured laces are. These are very heavy floral edges--this is A LOT of stitching.
One thing I noticed: they now say "Maker once known". An interesting way to say we didn't used to care about women's work, names lost...

There was a coat (entari) with what I suspect is oya--the Turkish #needlelace
The MFA entry is here: https://collections.mfa.org/objects/47920/coat They say it's #BobbinLace, but I think it's #Needlelace.

Ok, now to the Sargent exhibit. It was very crowded, even midweek. Luckily, most were there for the paintings. I was there for the accessories. And there was lace.
Several House of Worth gowns, not well described in the reviews I've seen of this.
But here's lace. Metal lace on the La Carmencita dress. Must be handmade--those rings would be hard to do by machine? The painting gives the impression of trims, but this is what it really looked like.

Ok, back to this thread, my images loaded up overnight. #MFABoston #lace items.
I saw some of the earliest lace pattern books. One by Isabella Parasole 1625, and one by Cesare Vecellio 1591. They are smaller than I thought from the online prints I've seen.
A third lace pattern book was in another case nearby. Domenico da Sera's 1543 "Ornamento de le belle e virtudiose donne". This book was new to me, needs to get into #Wikipedia...

At #MFABoston yesterday, I think I saw Karen from 1590... "Donna Mediocre" was one of the woodcuts from Cesare Vecellio's book on women's fashion.

All my lace photos are still uploading, but I went looking for the ones I had accession numbers for. Here's one.
Amazing #NeedleLace with fine, fine linen thread. The leaves are amazing--two different looks on each side of the rib. Wonderful work. Look at the single panel image to see what I mean.
But besides that, I was so psyched to see #MFABoston had a #Mastodon share link!

OMG, this stunning #embroidery (not in the Sargent part, in the Strong Italian Women exhibit section at the #MFABoston).
Oh, and the lace...mmm...later.

Boston weather in the fall is usually changeable, but this weekend was something else. Saturday was a warm and sunny day, perfect for bathing suits and shorts, and lingering for sunset at the beach. Sunday was cold and rainy, a day for Gortex and fleeces. Still, on my way back to my car after going to a chamber concert, I stopped by one of my favorite local outdoor gardens.

Current exhibition at #MFABoston includes textiles from #Renaissance #Italy, it seems. I was wondering if there would be #lace there, and I turned to the page and saw the Parasole book! So I think I'm going to have to go check it out....
