"Santiago Jiménez, Sr. (1913–84), born in San Antonio, Texas, began to play the accordion at the age of eight. His father Patricio, born in Eagle Pass, Texas, also played the accordion. Jiménez, Sr., was known for his use of the two-row button accordion even after the still popular three-row instruments were introduced. During the 1930s, he and Narciso Martínez pioneered the use of the accordion in Texas-Mexican music. Jiménez, Sr. enjoyed a long recording career into the 1950s and ’60s. Flaco Jiménez and his brother, Santiago Jiménez, Jr., continued in their father’s footsteps—both continue to perform today. I worked here for almost a decade. I love the RGV, its people (even though they are a mixed lot, and mostly don't agree with me politically or socially), and the university (well, most of the people "below" the level of Dean, which is about 30,000 folks). The university is the lifeblood of Edinburg, TX, and a critical employer for Edinburg, McAllen, Brownsville, and many other small communities. The GOP's sabotage of HSIs when Hispanic voters are a major reason they are now in power is a vicious betrayal.
And I remember, maybe 15 years ago, sitting in a College meeting where faculty were brainstorming how to keep our students from feeling the pinch of Texas' perennial gutting of higher ed budgets: "we can increase class sizes", "use department funds to employ TAs," "Use OER textbooks," etc. And one of my colleagues cut through the chatter to ask,
"Why are we trying so hard to protect these adults from the actions of their democratically-elected representatives?"

Doing interesting work with a #MexicanAmerican (formerly just #Mexican) coauthor about #GenderRoles and right-wing #voting behavior across multiple ethnic/racial groups. The colleague is a political scientist so his view of things like "masculinity" is different from mine. It's a lot of fun to discuss. I just made this graphic for him and the other authors to stimulate discussion about what we want to measure. The lower-right yellow explosion indicates the discrepancy currently of most interest to me as a measure of masculinity conflict/threat/stress, though I'd truly prefer (and have tried once to construct) a measure that somehow combines all three discrepancies.
Submissions to #SPSSI are due today for the conference in #portland #oregon in June.

So in January 2015, over 20 years after the song was released, #RageAgainstTheMachine’s #lyrics–along with #KRSOne’s #HipHop teachings– were deemed to be against #Arizona state law, which states that schools cannot “advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals.”
