  1. This Monday, 30th of June, I will start my first day at #MetService!

If you're interested in how a typical job quest turns out...
Have a look at the depressing statistics:

  2. #MetService did a decent too, by eventually getting back to me, and apologizing it took them so long.
I mean, I shouldn't be impressed by this behaviour, it should be normal... but if you've been in the apply-for-a-job mill, you know it isn't the norm.

  3. The MediaWatch team also talked about the weather segment of the new Stuff TV3 news bulletin. TBH I think a national weather report has been pointless since the MetService website and app became widely used. But a *regional* news report would be much more useful, and arguably easier for Stuff to do for TV3 than it would have been for NewsHub.

    This is the kind of thing I had in mind when I wrote this;

“Commercially, we deliver scientific insights and solutions that give local and international businesses a competitive edge in the transport, energy, media, resources, industry, infrastructure and retail sectors.”
The key being commercially— they have been known to allow some #opendata offerings to non commercial - but it’s “valuable” rather than public access

  6. "#MetService is New Zealand's national weather authority and the Government-approved sole provider of severe weather warnings.

.. a State Owned Enterprise established to deliver weather services to benefit New Zealand's people and economy."

    about.metservice.com/our-compa

So, if the public of Aotearoa own MetService, why is the software and weather data they produce proprietary? Remember this is totally compatible with being a social enterprise charging fees for services etc, rather than "IP" rents.

"I’m sad to know that the New Zealand meteorological agency MetService, has retired radiofax in July 1st, and is focusing on “modern solutions” of sending synoptic charts to vessels. In 2021 I received several radiofax charts from MetService in Porto Alegre."

  12. #Metservice have upgraded Rodney & Albany to a Severe Thunderstorm Warning as of 3:15pm today - we’re expecting torrential rain, which brings flash flooding risks.

Take shelter indoors if you can.
    Stay away from trees.

Around 3:45 we’re expecting the storms to sit near OREWA, KAUKAPAKAPA, DAIRY FLAT, WHANGAPARAOA and SILVERDALE.

We’re expecting them to move southwards and lie over AUCKLAND, OREWA, ALBANY, DAIRY FLAT, WHANGAPARAOA, SILVERDALE, COATESVILLE and PAREMOREMO at 04:15 pm.

Thanks to #MetService for operating their #weather #radar network that makes this possible.

  18. Can I just say a BIG thank-you to everyone at #MetService who has been working day and night to analyse and forecast and warn, and most importantly to communicate to the public and authorities about #CycloneGabrielle, starting days in advance.

No-one is saying "Why didn't they warn us about this?"

It shows an animation (animated GIF) of the last 24 hours of the #MetService #weather #radar composite over all of #NZ. If you allow it to use your location (this is not logged) it will put a red X on your approximate location on the map.

You can use this to look at the rain coming down over the country with #CycloneGabrielle.

This runs on my local server - best efforts - may not always be reliable. 🙂

  30. These cyclones are horrible. We were in #Gisbourne for the last one. Might be worth a thought during the next few days of #CycloneGabrielle as to what official feeds we really need in the #ActivityPub #Mastodon world in #Aotearoa - I'm thinking #GeoNet, #MetService, #Niwa, #RadioNZ, personally I'd love to see Rivers each have their own alert level feed too ... and who else?

  31. Useful blog post from #MetService about tropical cyclone tracks and the like. Highly relevant to ex TC #Hale of course.
