METSÄÄN - OURBOROS AUTOPOIESIS - extreme EFX chain feedback looper

A feedback looper that squeezes the extreme out of your EFX-chain. Perfect for 'Tone scouts', sound-designers and those who like harsh noises. An extended version of the Death by Audio - Total Sonic Annihilation 2 pedal, the METSÄÄN version has a 3 stage MODE selector that switched between 'vanilla'/ORIGINAL and boosted HIGHS or LOWS, which exponentially enhances the sonic possibilities of the original pedal and allows for dynamic frequency shifts in a harsh noise live performance, for example. But this pedal is not just god for harsh noises, but also for subtle tone experimentation, imagine a sound modulator like a delay or tremolo modulating itself in a loop. wonderful textures and abstract saturation might occur. Sometimes, you might get not much out of it and with other set-ups a plethora of unexpected sonic gems. With some EFX chain set-ups an input signal is not needed, as you can generate no-input noise scapes. A experimental sound artist's treasure trove/ pandorra's box. This feedback looper enables you to send the output of your EFX-chain back into it's input, in NORMAL mode, you control the the amount with only the FEEDBACK (Note: this pot works counterclockwise) pot, but in the ACTIVE (indicated by a ultraviolet LED) mode you get hands-on control of GAIN, FEEDBACK, PHASE, FREQUENCY MODE and of course final OUTPUT LEVEL (to tame the potentially destructively loud signal.). The 4x 6.3mm mono sockets on the back side of the pedal are from left to right (when pointing away from you): OUTPUT, RETURN, SEND, INPUT. When the TRUE BYPASS (indicated with a green LED) is engaged, your signal still goes through your EFX-chain in the loop. The Power input is for 'boss-style', center negative 2.1mm DC plugs, that are pretty standard for EFX-pedals it needs 9V DC (PSU not included). Build into a standard die-cast aluminum enclosure individually painted in the the burned out industry camo pattern in chrome and black. Handmade by GRM for METSÄÄN.

STOCHASTIC ASYMMETRY - for eruptive harsh noise assault patterns

The STOCHASTIC ASYMMETRY is a machine to generate glitched-out eruptive noise assault patterns. it is a signal generator for those who are interested in exploring the harsher spectrum of experimental noise making. STOCHASTIC ASYMMETRY can be the base battery for any anti-fascist noise resistance set-up and running it through a chain of manipulating EFX will lead to massive sonic results. Simply put… 5 square wave oscillators of which 2 are LFOs generate complex waveforms which are getting further effected by a starve control, a distortion and a resonant low pass filter.

Of course nothing really is simple, so here are more details:

WAVING:
Each of the 3 square wave oscillators has a FREQUENCY potentiometer for controling pitch, a RANGE toggle switch to select 2 different frequency ranges, a MODE toggle switch that enables latch or trigger mode and a TRIGGER button switch, as well as a orange indicator LED. In trigger mode, the oscillator is mixed into the signal only momentary as long as the trigger is depressed. But be aware, the machine has a non-linear response in the trigger section and sometimes an oscillator raises it’s voice even when you did not engage it with the trigger, that is part of the fun and it can get less out of control depending on the starve setting. when the oscillator’s LED is on it’s LED is on and it might or might not switch off when you repress the trigger, but as said, this function is highly stochastic and i have not been able to predict it (a lesson for control freaks!). All three oscillators have different ranges, higher on the left and lowering towards the right. A MIX toggle switch selects linear or non linear mixing, the non-linear mixing is a bit more uneven and noisy.

MODULATING:
Each of the 2 LFOs has a SPEED control and similar to the other oscillators a MODE toggle switch and when in trigger mode the LFO can be activated temporally, which is most interesting when running in higher speeds for tremolo-like effects or high pitch noise assaults in the highest setting.

SOUNDSHAPING:
the signal generated with oscillators with or without LFOs is shaped by two more controls, which are highly depending on other setting on the machine, so they as well, do not have a fully linear response. the EDGE control works like a distortion, that adds more sharp edges to the waveform, resulting in ‘higher harmonics’, while the CURVE control acts like a resonant low pass filter that rounds off the already very 'edgy’ squarewave forms and it has slight self-resonance. Both of these controls are as such not affected by the power-starve function, but works differently the more the oscillator section is starved. With very much starving (STARVE counterclockwise) the CURVE control can generate almost electro-acoustic sounding crunch and hiss for example (see demovideo). Of course there is also a VOLUME control that lets you tame the output level.

STARVING:
The STARVE control regulates the power that is accessible to the IC that is used for the 5 oscillators and when one turns it down (CCW) the different oscillators start to get more stochastic in their functions so the generated waveform becomes more noisy. Turning STARVE counterclockwise also has a global scale effect, it lowers the pitch of the three oscillators and the speed of the LFOs, but at the same time it also introduces high pitched noises and clicks. Similar to the other trigger functions on this machine there is also a POWER toggle switch, that is either in latch mode or activates the power trigger mode, which interacts with the STARVE function. When starve is up (CW) the decay time of the oscillators using up the available power is faster, while when STARVE is low the decay is longer, while the oscillators get less power in total.

CONNECTING:
STOCHASTIC ASYMMETRY runs on 12V DC (positive inside/negative outside, 2.1mm standard socket) and unless otherwise communicated it ships with a suitable recycled PSU with euro-plug. The audio output is a standard 6.3mm mono instrument jack socket, but beware that due to the special enclosures it might not work with angled plugs.

The first batch of STOCHASTIC ASYMMETRY is build into enclosures found in an abandoned car repair shop in turku. Originally they were some kind of 'black box’ engine data-read-out ports and are now painted with the 'industrial burn-out’ camo pattern in chrome and black. Handmade by GRM for METSÄÄN.

as expected the so called discussion on the matter brought up by me and other vectors in the finnish scene & 'punk in finland' forum is dominated by ignorant trolls who pretend to have a discussion, while pushing aspa+co's releases in the same forum in other threads. it is a farce, but i expected nothing less of this place. clearly these discussions need to be held in other places and must be followed by consequences instead of another long phase of silence. more labels and venues need to be confronted with what kind of affiliations they platform and by that help to get another step closer into the accepted realm of culture and politics. it seems like when just a few singular voices are bringing such these topics, it is just ignored and when these voices do not even speak the local tongue, the 'outside agitator'/tourist stamp is easily applied and the hope for the un-disrupted business as usual seems to dominate. this all does not only apply to the PE / harsh noise genre, but also the psychodelic spectrum in which for example crypto fascist anti-semites are welcomed contributors. in times of raising fascism on national (the finnish government might become a coalition of conservative capitalists with the fascist PS party) and global level, we need to attack the creeping plague on all levels in our lives. DIRTY DRONE DISTORTION - a doom drone stompbox (3rd batch)

This one is for heavy doom drone sounds, no matter if you run your stringed instruments (electric guitar/bass/etc) or a synth through it, the Dirty Drone Distortion will add 10 tons of weight to it. It is housed in a sturdy aluminum enclosure, hand-painted with ‘industry burnout’ camo patterns in black and silver. The circuit is a modded vintage SUNN MODEL T preamp based distortion with HIGH and LOW control and a build in duo-oscillator DIRTY DRONE section. MIX control blends the DRONES with the pedal’s input, before the distortion kicks in. But the machine can also be used as a stand alone drone synth, if you fancy. Each oscillator has a FREQUENCY control for and a WAVEFORM toggle-switch for TRIANGLE and SQUARE wave selection. The upper toggle has 3 positions, the middle position disables that oscillator, if a single non-overlaping waveform is desired. The third toggle engages the EXTREME DISTORTION mode when flipped to the right. (NOTE! this is not explained or shown in the 1st demo video, since i have changed this function after recording it.) The NORMAL DISTORTION (toggle left) results in the wonderfully saturated distortion this circuit is famous for. GRM performed as COLDSORE with an array of their self build METSÄÄN MACHINES, namely the Musique Concrète Platform (bowed, plugged, stroked and scratched), Dirty Drone synth, ANAPHYLAXIS filter + some EHX pedals. Beware: This is the most 'dark ambient' recording of COLDSORE this far.

Before the instrumental set, GRM made a short rather abstract vocal intro about noise, traffic, communication, transparency, responsibility, disruption of deeply engraved patterns of social behavior and complicity.

This machine is named Dirty Drone Deluge, because the sequenzer is flooding the delay for a flood of sounds. It’s enclosure is a recycled drawer (25.5x16.5x9.5cm) of a wooden cabinet, painted in the ‘burnt out industry’ camo patterns in black and chrome. The panel is made of coarsely sanded plastique aluminum laminate with some stamped in function indicator letters.This METSÄÄN machine contains two sections: an extra noisy ECHOBLENDER delay/distortion (more on that in the ECHOBLENDER postings) and an 4-step sequencer. Each step has a FREQUENCY control, a RANGE toggle-switch (low/high) and a LDR (Light Dependent Resistor), that allows frequency control by throwing shade or shining light onto it (shadow=higher/light=lower). A SPEED control sets the sequencers tempo and another toggle-switch kills the sequencers signal to the ECHOBLENDER section. Furthermore there is an INPUT socket (6.3mm mono TS plug) for injecting external signals to the ECHOBLENDER, either passively mixing with the SEQUENZER section’s signal, when that is not switched off. Introducing the METSÄÄN MCP mini - a Musique Concrète Platform

Nothing new, it's an ancient and classic concept of a modular experimental music instrument. It contains the Metsään charge amplifier for contact microphones with a wide frequency range response that includes BASS, not just the usual tinny pure piezo disc squeals. An array of clamps and brackets make it possible to attach all kinds of material and resonance bodies/receptors in a modular fashion, so you can have different set-ups for different sessions or swap parts on the fly and record the engineering sounds as well. The MCP consists of a recycled and painted wooden box and has a strip of coarse sandpaper on its surface for some extra crunchy sounds. Comes with a selection of objects and a cushioning industrial felt mat for table sound isolation and feedback reduction and a 9V battery block with adapter clip, but it also works with a clean 9v DC boss-style (minus insinde) pedal power supply.

Testing the new #METSÄÄN MACHINE the first #DirtyDroneDeluge with a light controlled 4 step sequencer running through an #Echoblender delay/distortion section. In this clip the output signal also runs through heavy reverb, the unnatural habitat of it's sound. Each step has individual frequency control and a toggle switch that selects two different ways of how the LDR (light dependent reaistor) affects the pitch of the step. A SPEED control makes it go fast or slow. The sequencer runs on an algorythm, that adds very slight variations to the flow. The machine runs on standard 9V DC pedal power supplies (boss-style, center negative). PSU not included. Abailable soon. DM if interested. Stay detuned.

The Dirty Drone #31 is an one-off build, based on a modified Dirty Drone Defrost in a recycled wooden box with a raw, broken hexagon pattern in grey and black. With 2x 6.3mm TS instrument jack output channels and a total of 8 square wave oscillators. The oscillators are configured as 4 pairs. Every pair has a combined pitch control and a offset control. Two 3 position toggle switches, select slight tonal differences. Each output channel has a level control and an optional low-pass setting. The left channel is more linear and drone-y and the right channel is more textured and can create primitive repeating patterns. Powered by 12V DC (2.1mm, center positive barrel connector), comes with a recycled euro-style mains power supply. Size: 14 x 13 x 7 cm (including knobs). Handmade by grm for METSÄÄN.
