  1. CW: public transport Melbourne

Personally I think the new metro tunnel in Melbourne is a little bit of a dud.

In 20 years when they have built up apartments around the new stations and the city flow has adapted it will be better but at the moment it is pretty anaemic.

I think the bravest decision I've seen is they don't let the Pakenham line stop at Richmond... it kind of makes sense from an overall systems flow but from an individual commuter perspective it is pretty harsh.

  2. I enjoy taking the #MetroTunnel to speed up my commute home but I still haven't adjusted to the increased length of time being in a tunnel compared to a typical City Loop is slightly unnerving. Always a relief to get out from the tunnel near Hawksburn. #Naarm #Melbourne

  3. One new issue with State Library / Melbourne Central that I have noticed since the Metro Tunnel opened has to do with interchanging.

When coming out of State Library Station there are no screens to tell you the next train departures from platforms at Melbourne Central. The only bank of screens on the way faces perpendicular to the path of travel.

Installing a new bank of screens facing the top of the escalators as you come up from State Library would be a massive help. Especially when wait times for trains can regularly be 30+ minutes.

  8. People were stuck on trains with no air conditioning for up to two hours during last night's major disruption of trains that use the new Metro Tunnel. The problem was caused by a trains pantograph becoming entangled with overhead wires around Armadale.

  10. Heh I didn't notice there was a disruption. Because the Cranbourne / Pakenham Lines don't go through Richmond anymore, there was no information there.

I think this is another thing that can be improved now that the network is more reliant on interchanges. It may be important to know what is happening on another line, even if it doesn't directly go to your station.

  11. EDITED
This is the scene at platforms 3/4 at Richmond Station for passengers waiting for a train to Frankston. Never seen it like this before.

Looks like the first major disruption post-Big Switch for the #MetroTunnel People seem to be catching Frankston trains to get around it where they can. transport.vic.gov.au/disruptio

More generally on the Tunnel, as others have pointed out:

    1) the messaging and comms for City Loop / Flinders St / Metro Tunnel needs to be improved
    2) interchange conditions at Caulfield / Malvern need a big improvement given how much more heavy lifting these stations will be doing
    3) the issues caused by legacy decisions outside the scope of the Metro Tunnel need to be addressed (see previous toots)

  16. First weekday of the "Big Switch" for the #MetroTunnel and it seems to have gone reasonably well, other than some teething issues that are to be expected with any project.

There are important details to fix though. These are mainly legacy problems from previous projects and decisions.

Like this PID at Melbourne Central Station that is now showing State Library Station departures, but just faces this huge advertising pillar where nobody can see it.

Others have pointed out issues with wayfinding, online information being broken and inconsistent messaging.

Overall it seems to be going well. Great to have new infrastructure and more frequency*!

  21. First work day of the new train timetables (Frankston and Cranbourne/Pakenham lines getting a workover) and honestly there isn't too much confusion. You can definitely spot the commuters that aren't used to changing trains though!

  22. I was surprised to find out that the fastest way to Tottenham from Coburg is now to get off at Macaulay and walk 1.3km to Arden.

I was expecting the transfer to be at State Library.

  28. Spotted this brand new line diagram and rail connections sign at Parliament Station.

    The good:
    - Connecting transport is included
    - Fare zones are marked
    - Colours, fonts, etc are consistent with other PTV wayfinding
    - It's close to a map

    The bad:
    - It's been installed over two weeks ahead of the timetable and route changes included in this poster which will confuse people
    - City Loop directions are not clear, especially explaining which train to catch to get to key stations like Flinders Street or North Melbourne
    - There's a lot of wasted space and it's not easy to read
    - The zone 1/2 overlap is not marked
    - The Glen Waverley Line is not treated the same as the Alamein Line with its design
    - Including the 609 as a bus connection from Hawthorn Station is technically correct but not a useable interchange
    - Labels for the "Traralgon Line" are different at Flinders Street and Richmond

It's far from the worst poster but there is room for improvement
