I see a lot of fancy modern locomotives featured on Mastodon's train track Tuesday, but none are finer than EMD's F7. This one operatates at the Illinois Railway Museum. The fact that this particular locomotive went into service the year and month I was born has nothing to do with it

CW: uspol, chicago
I saw some DHS cops carrying carbines at a downtown #Chicago #Metra station today. Maybe ICE, maybe from something else that has been dragooned into also doing ICE stuff.
I'm not sure if they had any assignment other than to mill around the train station and get us used to seeing armed federal cops milling around a train station. I can't imagine that their presence is good for Metra's ridership.

Hey all 👋🏼 🤗 I've been absolutely swamped at work (an entire month on site, everyday!) but wanted to mention real quick that the #Chicago transit 🚆 🚂 system is facing a massive budget shortfall for 2026!
There is currently NO funding set aside in the '26 #illinois budget to address the crisis facing #Chicgoans who rely on #CTA #metra and #BNSF for work or ridership or both.
If you rely on these services or just like #walkablecities, #DSA #CDSA has prepared a short letter that you can submit to Gov. #pritzker in just a few clicks ! 🖱️

Watching the Caltrain go by with their stupid high-efficiency higher-speed electrification and their stupid fancy new double decker cars without the wasted space of the old galley cars is making me SO MAD. :babyrawr:
STOP BEING SO FANCY. *glares at it but double glares at Illinois for Metra being underfunded outdated trash* :vlpn_angry:

When I purchase my ticket through the app as the train is pulling into the station, I wonder if this is what Trinity feels like when she gets operating instructions for the UH-1 Huey uploaded directly into her brain. #Today #PublicTransportation #Trains #Metra #Chicago #TheMatrix

I wonder if I'll run into the asshole who yelled at me last week when I asked him to respect the quiet car rules.

Yeah, shaking off their freight train heritage is long overdue.
As an occasional user in the city (so not a regular user of a single line) it was always frustrating looking things up. And as Thom of TRA mentioned, keeping the compass direction in the name (a holdover from the original names) isn't terribly useful -- we already know which direction we're going.
The "station of origin" idea made much more sense. I hope they adopt it.

The metal framework above represents the prevalence of urban life, while the person below walks with a sense of purpose. I aimed to capture a moment in a bustling city, where human life interacts with industrial structures, creating a narrative of daily routine against a backdrop of resilience.

Spent an hour this morning going through my closet and figuring out what clothes can be donated and what clothes need to be discarded. In the pocket of a dress shirt, back when I had to wear a shirt and tie to work, I found a receipt for parking at the Pingree Metra station from August 2009!!

Don't mind me, just checking the Metra website for service alerts to see if the train is dropping me off 90 minutes late like it did last Tuesday.
"Would it help if I got out and pushed?"

The double decker Metra trains look like they have a handlebar mustache with a shouty mouth, a perfect look for a workhorse train!

Which US city’s commuter rail is the best, and why is it Metra?

Huh, the new Bears proposal for a stadium is... wildly different than I expected :otter_peek: I really like what the renders did with the old Soldier Field columns (and frankly, the UFO they landed inside of it was always a massively ugly waste of money). I feel mostly ambivalent on the proposal I think, provided taxpayers aren't on the hook for it.
If this proposal actually happens, civic leaders from the south side really should lobby hard for the CTA to revisit the Gold Line proposal to take part of the existing Metra electric right-of-way and turn it into a rapid transit corridor. If the city really wants to revitalize the lakefront and drive tourism, they should focus on increasing access between the lakefront parks (the stupid bean/Millennium Park, Grant Park, etc), the Museum Campus (the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Planetarium, Soldier Field), McCormick Place, and Jackson Park (the Museum of Science and Industry and the new Barack Obama Presidential Library). Plus the Gold Line could be used to bring a valuable link for south lake shore communities between the Loop all the way down to South Chicago. :vg_puro_shrug: Seems like a win/win to me.
Side note: Also, boost the Green Line back to Jackson Park like it used to be :neofox_what: It'd make for a great transfer point for people between the Gold Line and the Green Line.
