Putting the feelers out there for my partner that runs a business on IG, is thinking about threads, and eventually wanting to move to mastodon.
Due to some of the word being that if you delete the threads app, that your IG account also gets deleted or something....
They are curious about what happens to their threads, and IG accounts, would they get erased if migrating away from threads to a mastodon instance?

Meta's Threads is enhancing integration with the fediverse by:
➡️ allowing users to see fediverse replies on others' posts
➡️ syndicating API-originated posts to the fediverse.This aims to expand Threads' reach and utility, contrasting with X's restrictive API policies. The feature is in beta, with some Mastodon servers preemptively blocking Threads.

Up until now, I've stayed out of the Meta Threads discussion. I'll just say that in the last few months, I've discovered at least 3 folks that I had previously followed on Twitter, and now I'm very happy I can now follow them here on Mastodon. Being able to read their posts here greatly increases my satisfaction on Mastodon.
FWIW, I get the concern about a possible Embrace, Extend, Extinguish play by Meta.

Scrolled a bit through #ThreadsApp just now. The #meta (haha) posting seems to have died down. At this point I’m maintaining the account as a starter list of normies and Brands™ once the service opens up federation.

Here are my thoughts on #MetaThreads:
They're just using ActivityPub to speed up their own growth. They don't give a damn about interoperability and federation. Once they have the numbers, they will drop ActivityPub faster than advertisers dropped Twitter. -

Why is #MetaThreads bothering to connect to the Fediverse? What do they gain?

More and more animation/comics-related artists that already kind of despised Twitter are now on Threads. A lot may even find it more convenient because 1/ they’re more active on Instagram and 2/ sometimes they’re forbidden by contract with their producers to have any kind of interaction with 18+ content.
To be honest if I could stop using a Twitter>Fediverse bridge to follow them I would be delighted.
70m users so far on Threads, the migration button of Instagram is working full throttle
