J’aime, je n’aime pas. Roland Barthes, the French sociologist famously listed his likes and dislikes then discussed how pointless they are to anyone else.
He writes: “Here begins the intimidation of the body, which obliges others to endure me liberally, to remain silent and polite confronted by pleasures or rejections which they do not share.”
Some of mine.
I don’t like: crowds, emojis (but I gave in), finding dead mice in the library (even with garnish) …I like: lemons, cappuccino, croissant on Saturdays, moss en masse, peonies, lupin, clouds on a sunny day, rain that bounces off the ground, hiking in new snow, air so crisp you can see your breath, notes typed on a manual typewriter, fact checking, habaneros, midnight, black pencil doodles, plain text editors, Snøhetta designs, Amanda Gorman, Mini Coopers, cats, Khatia Buniatishvili at a piano, and 김진산 (Jinsan Kim) on acoustic guitar.
Roland Barthes’:

CW: TL:DR: the pro-Threads-federation camp's most common arguments are based on ignorance or lies. Fuck all y'all
My summary of the pro-federation camp's arguments:
-not every FB user is bad
-more is better
-the fediverse could draw people away from threads
-this represents an opportunity for innovation
-porting an account between instances is hardThese aren't unreasonable arguments on the face of it. However, the consistent flaw is that the people presenting these arguments studiously avoid mentioning any of the real reasons the anti-federation camp are opposed, to wit:
-FB's documented history of enabling genocide
-the obvious fact that since they allow e.g. Libs of Tik Tok on Threads, it is already in violation of most "good" instances' terms of service
-FB's documented current practices of abusing workers in lieu of doing actual moderation
-FB's documented history of doing unethical experiments on their users
-FB's documented history of of enabling illegal (in the USA!) racial and religious discriminationThe one thing that the pro-federation camp WILL mention is the concern over EEE (Embrace, Extend, Extinguish), but I've never seen a reasonable explanation for why this is a scenario we shouldn't fear. It's just handwaving.
The pro-federation camp has also repeatedly tried to dishonestly frame the possibility of an admin making an instance block decision with which their users disagree as an example of tyranny. This, I believe, is because "porting instances is hard" is a wack-ass argument and they know it; thus they must catastrophize it and make it sound worse than it is.
So, overall, I've tried to keep an open mind towards the enthusiasts, but the more I listen to them, the less impressed I become. Over several months, none of them (that I've interacted with) have acknowledged, without prompting, that people who aren't straight and cis and Christian and white and able-bodied and moderate/liberal/conservative have a different set of risks to consider than those who are.
And that's the irritating part. Because we're RIGHT FUCKING HERE, we're your mutuals in many cases! We're doing our best to tell y'all what OUR experiences with Mark Zuckerberg's company have been like. The information is there. Thus, we can observe that you remain ignorant out of callousness and carelessness, or you are deliberately lying about our motivations. Really, one or the other, it doesn't matter: both options mean you suck.
Please suck less, #Fediverse.

Having and listening to various discussions with other admins about how to deal with Facebook's upcoming entry to the fediverse.
For me, the sticking point is really the whole, y'know, genocide thing. Like, OK, I can see why admins would still see benefit in fe—No! I actually can't see why!!! This is the big G!!! This shouldn't be hard! This is the easiest fucking moral test possible and you're like "uhhh is this open book?" Jesus Christ what's wrong with you people!!!

Do emacs users remap the facebook button to meta?

Different people want different things for the Fediverse. In fact, there is already a schism over basic human decency (and it's a good thing; the likes of Gab absolutely shouldn't be welcomed by most). There is a very real racism problem where many people's idea of "nice" tends to push out non-white participants. And there are also some usability issues, where tech-savvy users (myself included) don't acknowledge or address UX concerns because we can easily work around them, ultimately excluding those wit different skillsets to our own detriment.
But.
For everyone saying that the Twitter migration "failed" or that we must accept federation with Meta because they will bring enormous numbers of users and/or the mythical "mainstream acceptance," I think there's a serious basic disagreement that goes unspoken. Most of these people seem to define success as growth and/or reaching some arbitrary large scale (sometimes while also pointing out the technical roadblocks to that). But I think a lot of others (myself somewhat included) see success as meeting existing users' needs for information and social connection, and reject a growth/death dichotomy.
"Mastodon will never be big enough to be a competitor to Twitter or Facebook unless we federate with Meta." is just not a convincing argument to me, because "being big enough" is not a goal I care about (do remember my above disclaimers about inclusion here; my stance is not "works for me, no improvements needed"). In fact, I think that federating with Meta will be a fatal mistake for those that do it in terms of the goals I care about, even if it leads to more growth for those servers (and that's even without assuming a full EEE outcome).
I'd like the fediverse to be more inclusive, and to attract a broader audience in terms of technical ability and cultures, but I don't think it needs to grow exponentially to do that, and I think that either explicitly or implicitly viewing growth/scale as a necessity is harmful, as it tends to push out a lot of other priorities.

CW: Functional.cafe news
Hello #functionalcafe users, a couple of news:
About all the #meta #metameta matter, we decide to sign the fedipact.online, so we won't federate with Meta owned instances. We like our little space as it is... Can we prevent Meta from using ActivityPub? No. Can we stand and draw a line somewhere? I think we should.
We enabled Elasticsearch on the instance, so now full-text search is possible, but only on local toots.
Thanks for the attention, have a nice day!

#MetaMeta: my plan, since the first rumors of big tech ActivityPub instances started circulating months ago, has been to Silence any such instance as "too big to moderate", same as we already do with mastodon.social and others of its tax bracket.
If such an instance fills up with Nazis, TERFs, etc., then we'd upgrade to a suspension.
I haven't yet heard anything that'd change that plan, but if #VtuberHouse residents would rather I sign the block-Zuck-on-sight pledge, I can do so!
