The Jönköping municipality silver hoard looters are being prosecuted. They went metal detecting on a hillside next to Ölmstad church without a plan or a permit, found a hoard, couldn't report it because they knew they'd end up in court. Eventually they came forward. Stupid activity, stupid legislation.

Medieval seal with Roman stone is a 'special find'.
A metal detectorist has discovered a "really special" medieval seal matrix, with a Roman carved gemstone at its centre.
The discovery was made at Gosfield, just north of Braintree, Essex, in September last year and has been declared treasure by a coroner.

Worrying news about Norway's metal detecting legislation: according to a new proposal, it might fall back from being fairly progressive to being worse than the Swedish one. That would only lead to #archaeology losing contact with the people who make important finds, people who are usually very happy to collaborate with us.

I'm planning another one of my many fieldwork campaigns where I collaborate with the organised metal detector hobby. These lead on to papers in top scientific journals. But the local newspaper has its own ideas about what's important here:

New fun task: I've been accepted as a finds classification specialist for the central Danish public-facing metal detector finds website, DIME. People register their finds with a smartphone app while standing out in the fields!

Note that it's impossible to nighthawk the DBR. You need a small army of detectorists and entire days of fieldwork to pick it up. 2/2
