Frederick Douglass’ first pocket watch. Douglass wrote that, for a formerly enslaved man, it was more than just a fashionable item — it was a powerful sign that he was free and that his time was now his own.

The best praise I can give to an art exhibit is that it changed how I think about its subject. A Tiffany exhibit did that many years ago, and the Raphael exhibit has done it again.
I always liked Raphael just fine, but putting his work into a context of other people who surrounded him—earlier Madonna and Child painters, artists who influenced him, his fierce rival Michelangelo, and the members of his atelier who he trained and influenced, made me understand him so much more. The before/after of him meeting Leonardo and learning from him was particularly striking—you can see it so much in the pieces, thanks to a couple of well-chosen Leonardo drawings that are juxtaposed with Raphael.
If you’re anywhere near #NYC, if you have the slightest interest in Renaissance art, see it. #metMuseum

On Monday, we get to go to a Met members' only evening for the Raphael exhibit, and I
I just
These works have never been assembled together before, and will undoubtedly not be assembled together again in my lifetime. This is an amazing opportunity and probably worth the entire year's membership cost. It took the museum seven years to organize this exhibit because it involves so many different museums and collections.
I'll report back when I actually see it but I cannot wait.

Went to the Cloisters special exhibit about sex and gender in Medieval art today, just before it closed. I hadn’t realized how many Catholic saints were what we’d now call trans, but there was a whole section of the exhibit about it. Almost always FTM, usually justified as “miraculously transformed” but I’ll bet, to the extent that the stories were true, that what they were describing was just social transition.

The Met is an architectural puzzle with secrets hiding in plain sight. The Medieval Hall at its center is the original 1880 building, now surrounded by extensions. The famous facade has been unfinished for 117 years—those piles of stone atop the columns were meant to be sculptures. There's an underground shooting range for guards. The American Wing's facade was once freestanding.
