Here are my Perpetual Journal nature observations fm my yard 1, 2 & 3 yrs ago this week: Prickly Pear fruits; Velvet Mesquite catkins & seedpods; Western Tanager. This week in ‘26 we see lots of PP fruits, some VM catkins, & no Tanagers.

Someone long ago planted a grove of mesquite trees or perhaps it just appeared in this small canyon. The branches twist up from gnarled black trunks into a tangle of shadows, the ground is covered with tiny leaves and yellow seed pods that crunch pleasantly underfoot. I keep a Perpetual Journal; here are my entries from my yard 1, 2 & 3 years ago this week: Bloomed out Queen Victoria Agave stalk; insect egg cluster; Velvet Mesquite seedpods turning red. In '26 more Agaves are blooming & our Velvet Mesquite seedpods turned red mid-June.
