Remember in 2012 when many people were convinced that the world was ending because the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar (aka Mayan calendar) was "running out"?
Good times, comparatively.

What are the origin(s) of #nativeamericans. Some facts:
1. Some Native American languages are tonal while others are non-tonal. Tonal languages are found in Africa and East and Southeast Asia. Siberian languages are mainly non-tonal with few of them being tonal.
2. Some Native Americans have Siberian (#MesoAmerican) DNA and some have Oceanic DNA or a mix of both.
3. The Berlin Strait and some island chains in the Pacific Ocean formed a land path during the Ice Age.

Intellectual prejudice regarding pre-colonial native tribes and #Mesoamerican cultures, in particular, is one of the greatest tragedies of modern academia. I can not understand how any educated person acting in good faith can believe that native tribes and cultures were anything less than the beautiful, vibrant, and industrious people that they were. The number of times I have seen archeological finds dismissed as 'not being possible' or because 'there must have been other factors at play' is wretched. I refuse to acknowledge these claims to be anything other than purposefully demeaning as it betrays the underlying thought that pre-colonial natives were nothing but savage cave people, which only strengthens colonial ideology...

"The results showed a clear link to the idiosyncratic 260-day #calendar, punctuated by the reverence for the numbers 13 and 20. The findings demonstrate that the core structure of #Mesoamerican timekeeping was in place at least 3,000 years ago."

#CKDu now in Nepal, migrant labourer edition
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/01/06/climate-change-heat-kidney-disease/ from Gerry Shih in @washingtonpost h/t @snolen
The emphasis is here on heat in write up - but we know that’s not enough. The infection, toxin hypothesis are still out there
#mesoamerican makes less sense though and CKDu does seem a better moniker

If you are interested in the subject, a good article is the The Mesoamerican Connection in the Southwest by Randall H. McGuire.
The article pushes on the theory that #Mesoamerican pochteca traders exerted political and economic control over the #Native cultures in #Oasisamerica and goes down the possible and confirmed interactions.
