  1. A new day, another 30 year old Merzbow release: Oersted. This one is even more synth-heavy, which yesterday I said I didn't necessarily care for all that much. And even if this is not as fierce as Magnesia Nova and drags on a bit at times, I must say, I enjoy this much more now than last time I listened to it. Which is good, because those Urashima reissues were/are pretty expensive (although the quality is stellar).

  2. I have a somewhat complicated relationship with Merzbow's synth-driven releases, but listening to The Magnesia Nova vinyl reissue just now, makes me think I need to reevaluate my opinions, because it sounds better than ever. In fact, it sounds utterly great.

  3. Listening to Amlux, by #Merzbow. Awesome guitar dirges with moments of near-tactile granular noise grey-outs and digital erosion. I struggle to do it justice.

  4. Merzbow and John Wiese are doing amazing work together. Here's why I think it works... Wiese is like a virtuoso of noise. He's almost too on top of things. The Merzbow strength, in my opinion, is a kind of kitchen-sink approach and a total absense of technique and even judgement of what he's doing (that's how I hear it, anyway). Together, though I think Wiese dominates, there is a pretty effective balance.

  5. @simondueckert

“Usually, I panic and put on literal noise. Thank God, after all, for Merzbow.“

Made my day 😅 although I prefer the classics like Varèse and Schaeffer.

  7. Okay, I had to try. This is actually quite nice. Better than I remember. I might even like this more than some of his more synth-driven 90s albums. Got to love loops and frogs. And the cover is just beautiful.

  8. "Merzbow "Frog" Remixed And Revisited" revisited for the first time in about 20 years (probably).

I should probably give the Frog LP another chance too, but I actually think this is more worthwhile than the original album. In addition to good experimental/noise tracks, there are two very fine and heavy tracks from Sunn O))) and Boris (20 minutes!) playing on top of Merzbow's sounds.

  11. Listening to this metallic nightmare. I consider this the Hybrid Noisebloom of the #Merzbow pre-synth era. Very prickly, scrapy album, but rich in “worldbuilding.”

  12. Try as I might, I can't really expand my #Merzbow listening pool beyond five or six albums. Just ignoring the other 430 or whatever. The ones I like sound different every time anyway.

  13. End-of-the-world music from its greatest practitioner...

  14. Merzbow at NTS Radio 20th February 2025

The revered Japanese noise artist stops by for a regular NTS slot, playing some surprising selections from his diverse & deep record collection.

  15. #Merzbow set-up. Mainly of interest to me right now because I’m eyeing the same mixing board.

  16. #Upcoming Originally released in 1996, “The Prosperity of Vice, the Misfortune of Virtue” by #Merzbow was the soundtrack to a Japanese theatre piece based on the sexually uninhibited novels of Marquis de Sade where Masami Akita aimed to create an atmosphere of intensity beyond crushing walls of noise.
