  1. After it's discovery over 7 years ago, all Mersenne numbers below 2^82589933-1 have been double-checked by the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search and it is *officially* the 51st #MersennePrime! 🥳

  2. I’ve noticed there isn’t a day of the year dedicated to celebrating #MersennePrimes, so why not make today, May 7, the 127th day of the year, #MersennePrimeDay? (And May 6 on leap years.)

    127 (2^7-1) is both a #MersennePrime and the exponent of a much larger Mersenne prime (2^127-1), and the largest Mersenne prime below 365 (the next one is 8191). It’s also the largest number you can store in a signed 8-bit integer value.

  3. Fun math fact: 19937 is prime even when you take the end digit and put it back at the start repeatedly. It's known as a circular prime:

    19937 = prime
    71993 = prime
    37199 = prime
    93719 = prime
    99371 = prime

    It's also one of the 52 known Mersenne prime p-values (2^p-1), as 2^19937-1 is prime, and this Mersenne prime is the most common used period length for the Mersenne Twister pseudorandom number generator.

  4. Today marks the one-year anniversary of the current largest known prime number 2^136279841-1 being discovered! :MOULE_Dance:

  5. Some #MersennePrime news: on December 26, 2017, Jon Pace of the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search found that 2^77232917-1 was prime. It was the 50th *discovered* Mersenne prime, but on September 8th all double-check tests on Mersenne numbers below it have finished, officially confirming it to be the 50th Mersenne prime overall! :MOULE_Dance:

  6. CW: Geeking out about Mersenne Primes again (lots of digits)

    A #MersennePrime #math pattern I love is the Catalan-Mersenne number conjecture (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_M):

    2^2-1 = 3 (prime)
    2^3-1 = 7 (prime)
    2^7-1 = 127 (prime)
    2^127-1 = 170141183460469231731687303715884105727 (prime)

    Is 2^170141183460469231731687303715884105727-1 prime? It's so big it's unlikely, but you never know. We can only hope to find a factor of it: doublemersennes.org/mm127.php

  7. Though it was discovered over 9 years ago, all double-checks below 2⁷⁴²⁰⁷²⁸¹-1 have been verified and it is now *officially* the 49th Mersenne prime!

  8. 2⁷⁴²⁰⁷²⁸¹-1 is the 49th *discovered* Mersenne prime, discovered by Curtis Cooper at the University of Central Missouri in early 2016. All numbers of the form 2ᵖ-1 (where p is prime) must be double-checked to ensure no primes are missed.

    Good news: there's only 7 more double-check tests to go until 2⁷⁴²⁰⁷²⁸¹-1 is *officially* proven to be the 49th Mersenne prime *overall*!

  9. A fun #math project I found: can we say all 41,024,320 digits of the largest known prime number before a larger prime number is discovered?

    You get assigned a 419-digit exerpt of the prime for you to say on video, then everyone's videos saying their digits are put in a row so everyone says the prime number in full.

  15. A new Mersenne prime has allegedly been discovered! While secondary verification is still in progress we're most likely to break an almost 6-year drought.

  16. The largest #PrimeNumber (so far) was discovered five years ago today!

    It’s a #MersennePrime discovered by a computer used by Patrick Laroche, an IT professional from Florida, who used the #prime-finding software Prime95 to stress-test his builds. It’s part of something called #GIMPS (Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search) that anyone can participate in and maybe discover the next largest Mersenne prime!
