El exembajador de Estados Unidos en México, Ken Salazar, aseguró que el entonces presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador no respondió a los mensajes que le envió después de la captura de Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, ocurrida en julio de 2024, pese a que buscó aclarar que el gobierno estadounidense no participó en el operativo.
En una entrevista con la periodista Ilia Calderón, para N+ Univisión, Salazar explicó que, al conocer la detención del exlíder del Cártel de Sinaloa, envió una comunicación directa al mandatario mexicano para informarle que la captura no había sido organizada por autoridades estadounidenses.
Según el exdiplomático, en el mensaje precisó que «no fue nuestro avión, ni nuestro piloto ni nuestra operación», además de ofrecer una reunión para explicar los hechos.

Ken Salazar relató que, al no obtener respuesta, volvió a intentar establecer contacto al día siguiente, pero aseguró que el entonces presidente tampoco respondió a ese nuevo mensaje.
Durante la entrevista, el exembajador leyó un fragmento de su libro, en el que sostiene que buscó evitar que surgiera la percepción de que Estados Unidos había violado la soberanía de México con la captura de Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
Sus declaraciones se producen luego de que surgieran versiones que cuestionan la actuación de las autoridades estadounidenses en ese caso, tras la difusión de información relacionada con la aeronave utilizada para trasladar al presunto narcotraficante.
Investigación correspondía a la FGR
Salazar sostuvo que la investigación sobre la captura estaba a cargo de la Fiscalía General de la República (FGR), encabezada por Alejandro Gertz Manero, y afirmó que el gobierno estadounidense únicamente ofreció colaboración.
Explicó que tanto el entonces fiscal general de Estados Unidos, Merrick Garland, como la embajada estadounidense manifestaron disposición para compartir información con las autoridades mexicanas durante las indagatorias.
Asimismo, indicó que funcionarios de ambos países realizaron una inspección conjunta de la aeronave en la que fue trasladado Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, durante un encuentro celebrado en El Paso, Texas.
El exembajador añadió que, tras esa reunión, informó tanto a Washington como a las autoridades mexicanas sobre los resultados y volvió a intentar comunicarse con López Obrador, aunque aseguró que nuevamente no obtuvo respuesta. –sn–

Biden didn't control the Department of Justice, it operates independently from the White House. That separation exists specifically so that presidents cannot use federal law enforcement as a political weapon. That's why we're a democracy and not a tinpot dictatorship.
