I do a climate and sustainability review of the #Merribek monthly Council Agenda.
Here is my review for tonight's Council meeting. I have two Questions scheduled to ask (That is the max I can ask). My Council is progressive, but it is important to keep the pressure on for good governance. Democracy is more than just voting.

We hope #merribekcouncil is reusing this plastic Christmas tree each year.
We have read that a plastic Christmas tree can produce around 40 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions, which is more than double that of a real tree if it ends up in a landfill.
Plastic Christmas trees can pollute the surrounding environment as they wear and degrade with microplastic particles adding to the PM2.5 and PM10 particle air pollution from vehicles that makes us all a little bit sick.
A plastic Christmas tree can take over 500 years to decompose in a landfill. But it is equally problematic for toxic air pollution if incinerated.
For that home Christmas tree It’s more sustainable to reuse a plastic Christmas tree for at least 12 years.
But there are better sustainable options including:
🌲Decorating a living outside tree
🎄Buying a live potted tree. Perhaps a potted Wollemi Pine (an endangered species in the wild)
🎄If you buy a cut plantation Christmas tree to use, thoughtful disposal can allow it to decompose back to organic components. Much better than a plastic Christmas treehttps://www.sheffield.ac.uk/news/real-vs-fake-sustainable-christmas-tree-debate

And the last two days I’ve been busy updating Climate Action Merribek page on #MerribekCouncil elections with climate survey aggregated data, engagement of candidates across 3 surveys, links to other surveys on #MerriCreek and #AccessibleTransport and adding to the candidate responses for the 11 wards.

Rain meant we rested up today on our couch barking at people passing our front window while Dad blogged about the Barrow St, Coburg modal filter road closure trial coming up for decision by #MerribekCouncil on Wednesday evening that could improve safety for #ActiveTransport, especially local school kids..🐶🐶

It’s been 30 years since a few cyclists known as the Brunswick Bicycle Group (now #MerribekBUG ) got together to concrete a small section of the #MerriCreekTrail near CERES environmental park. Now the concrete shared-use trail managed by #MerribekCouncil stretches 21km from Dights Falls to the M80 in #Melbourne’s northern suburbs.
Never underestimate the actions of a few people to create change.

Inner north Naarm chihuahua meetup at Gilpin Park. Our first time, so we were a bit shy and stayed close to Dad. So many chihuahuas and a few other small breeds here. It was fun to meet so many chi’s and their nice humans.
Even though a few trees, finding shade was a bit competitive. It needs #MerribekCouncil to install a shade sail .
At least there are no gaps under the fence unlike at Richard’s Reserve and Moomba Park small dog areas.

Good news for CommsDeclare. #MerribekCouncil to impose a #FossilFuel Advertising Ban on Council Land. Also a Sports grounds surfaces policy for governance of #syntheticturf adopted, and #Extremeheat measures revised as Council has a Duty of Care.

Merri-bek Council just voted to declare #Merribek LGA to be a Nuclear Free Zone. Located in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, This is largely symbolic but a reaction against proposed AUKUS $368 billion nuclear powered submarines, nuclear waste storage.

At the #SydneyRoadStreetParty I Spoke to a person from Royal Park Tennis Club about Sand filled artificial turf. They have stuck with clay surfaces. Synthetic grass tennis courts last about 5 years, have #Microplastics loss and end of life disposal issue. So why is #MerribekCouncil so keen on #Fakegrass for tennis for community courts? #syntheticTurf
