I was curious to know what bird was the chatty cathy out there and it turns out that it's a house finch. It is chattering up a storm this morning. The quail is further away and I can hear its call in the distance. The Robin is a kind of boring chirp. I can see both the finches and the robins up in my big tree, which still hasn't leafed out, although it is starting to get close.

I have a great little app on my phone called Merlin - it’s basically Shazam for bird song. Always fun to see who’s back in the area - today is the first time this Spring for the chickadees.

Today's fun discovery; the Merlin Bird ID app. Now, every time I hear some bird calls, I whip it out to take a recording.
It identifies well even against strong winds, loud wind chimes, and shouty kids.
Let's see if I can haul my arse out of bed to record the dawn chorus this weekend.

And the answer's... Yes! 😊 I didn't get into my groove until the 32 second mark, but that was me. I'll attach a screenshot below proving I'm a bird whisperer! 🤣 #merlinbirdid #merlin #birdid #birdsoftheworld #birds

I thought to have a go at fooling the Merlin Bird ID app with my "impression" of an Eurasian Collared Dove down at the allotment this late afternoon 😁 Did I manage to? Weird #iOS bug: This (and only this) app has this drop shadow behind its description. No amount of tweaking seems to remove it 🤷
Edit: More precisely, all app icon text has a drop shadow, but only #MerlinBirdID is misaligned.

Heckenbraunellen!
1) heute Morgen durch das offene Badezimmerfenster gehört und von #MerlinBirdId erkennen lassen.
2) beim Abwaschen durch das Fenster in der Einfahrt rumhopsen sehen. -
Spent some time this cold grey morning outside for the Great Backyard Bird Count. I saw only the usual flocks of house sparrows and starlings that live near the parking lot garden.
According to Merlin’s listening feature, I heard the neighbor blue jay (yep) and a cardinal (also a neighbor) and a house finch. Never seen a house finch! -

What Counts as Wild?
Merlin called them Red Junglefowl. iNaturalist called them Domestic Chicken. The bird didn't change — just the taxonomy each platform was willing to accept. -
My mum told me about an app that listens out for #birds and then identifies them from their #birdsong. I knew there were a lot of birds here, but during a ten minute period at the weekend it identified all of these!
It then plays back whatever you want it to, so you can learn to identify the birds by ear.
The app is called Merlin. It’s free. It’s my new favourite thing. http://merlinbirdid.com

Submitting a rare bird sighting based on audio always weirds me out. I don't know what a Virginia rail sounds like! I don't have the courage of my comparison-listening convictions! Don't smite me, nice eBird reviewer I met recently!

@holgi Indeed! Ich hab heute morgen #mdrnh 'ne kleine Extrarunde durch den #Friedichshain gedreht, mit #merlinbirdid im Anschlag, und nicht nur die #Nachtigall ist da, war ein schönes Konzert.

We’re back home and it’s a beautiful morning in Lee’s Summit (#KCish) so we’re sitting on the deck.
Which reminds me… Do you know what Merlin never picked up while we were down in conservationist’s paradise, Shannon County? Invasive European house sparrows!
Add that to the long list of city noises I’ll be glad to leave behind. Someday, over the 🌈

Today I learned [via the amazing Merlin Bird ID app] that this is a female #RedWingedBlackbird. While I've never really thought about it, I didn't know about their sexual dimorphism. RWBBs are increasingly hard to come by around here since we've seen so much wetland loss.
I took this photo in June, 2009 🤯 with a Fuji point and shoot, and am only just now paying attention to it. Goes to show, there's always much to learn despite how far you've come.

Heard just now: one #bird , 9 aliases. A mockingbird performing the bird songs of 9 other species atop a telephone pole by the seacoast of #maine. Do not believe everything you hear! 🎭

Next Sunday (5 May) is National Dawn Chorus Day in the UK. Now if you find getting up before dawn a bit of a challenge you can record dawn chorus on your mobile and save the file. I use "GOM Recorder". The resulting file can then be imported into the excellent Bird app "Merlin". This app can both capture audio and then identify the birdsong within a sound file.
The image is a screenshot from the Merlin app. #MerlinBirdID #DawnChorus #CornellLab https://merlinallaboutbirds.com/ -
"Opt out" mail subscribe is the only reason Merlin requires an email address to use the app. And they guilt us by emphasizing it is a "free app". 🙁
This is stupid and disappointing. I just learned about this app and installed it with excitement, but now I'm not sure I want to use the app.

I am super bummed that I didn't get to participate in the great backyard bird count this year. If by chance you have time today (Monday) you still can. Unfortunately, I can't make it work.

First day back at work after a month of baby bonding leave. I'll tell ya, it was pretty nice sitting here with the window open (it's 34 F 😜) letting Merlin Bird ID listen to the neighborhood. It’s a real “round up the usual suspects” list, but I’m happy with the results. Not sure why I didn’t do this while on leave…

Carolina Chickadee or Black-capped Chickadee?
Due to climate change, the range of the Black-capped Chickadee and Carolina Chickadee overlap.

I think I have decided that I want my #iPhome #ActionButton to launch #MerlinBirdID and start the sound ID feature. Maybe with a prompt to confirm, to prevent the “butt dial” phenomenon.
Problem is, I haven’t a clue how to make that shortcut. If any of you experts want to techy-tech it up I’ll help to share it with the world…

Very cool #job for a #BirdsOfMastodon #engineer!
#CornellOrnithologyLab is hiring three #engineers to work on #MerlinBirdID - let me know if you get the job so I can follow along with your #work 🤗
