M. Ward’s 7th studio album, including a cover of Daniel Johnston’s “Sweetheart.” He’s joined by Mike Coykendall, Mike Mogis, Jordan Hudson, Adam Selzer and others, including vocals from Zooey Deschanel. M. Ward produced.

I just love M. Ward’s voice and his approach to songwriting and production – across his solo work and She & Him. (No, the “Me and My Shadow” is not the Irving Berlin/Al Jolson tune but a new song).

My copy—via Magnolia Record Club—is a signed 2024 reissue on metallic swirl vinyl with lacquer cut at Chicago Mastering Service by Jason Ward.

Dan Behar and co’s 13th studio album with John Collins, Joshua Wells, David Carsell, Nicolas Bragg, Ted Bois, and JP Carter.

Was number 30 on Pitchfork’s 50 Best of 2022.

My copy is the Vinyl Me Please edition on gray vinyl with black spatter.

The Mountain Goats, Getting Into Knives, 2020 on Merge

Nineteenth studio LP from John Darnielle and crew, recorded at Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis, and produced by Matt Ross-Spang. Similar crew to Dark in Here which was recorded shortly after this LP.

Love the liner notes credits for Ross-Spang: “the man himself, the dude with the heater in the basement, the fellow you know from the back room, the man who will not personally sell you any knives but can direct you to a guy who has at least three, two of them quite exotic.”

My copy—via Electric Fetus in Minneapolis MN—is the “gold metallic” 2xLP limited edition pressing.

always regarded this one as a rather violent tune. I rem going "home" from Penn State back in those days. damn that's a long time ago. an angry young man was he. oh probably. yep. with a belly that shook like bowl full of fiddlers three. mostly happy to be true.

Chapel Hill, NC indie rockers Superchunk release their debut, self-titled LP

It’s a rough start to what will become a much more polished and focused sound as soon as their next album. This one here is noisy to the point where a lot of the guitar riffs are lost in the haze.

When I first heard this, I thought it was kind of a Dinosaur Jr. rip off. But man, the cool DJs at school LOVED this album.

I mean, it does have some great indie rock tracks, including the anti-anthem “Slack Motherfucker”, which was released the prior year as a single, and “Sick To Move” and “My Noise”.

I think what makes this record a true classic is that it basically started the wonderful label Merge Records.
