  3. Mercury retrograde just ended; it's a time when plans change, technology glitches, and stuff has to be figured out again. The retrograde period covers most words that start with re-. Redo, review, etc. This weekend has been devoted to those tasks.

Writers know all about these words. The old adage, "Writing is rewriting" is said often, and it's true.

This week's #journalprompt is to think or write about something that has needed another look.

    Waxing Moon

    Pluto and Neptune Retrograde

Mercury DIRECT (tonight, we still have to get through the day)

You can read the latest on the garden over at Gratitude and Growth.

Mercury goes direct tonight, thank goodness. We still have to get through the challenges of the day. It will go retrograde again on the 24th of October, but at least we have a little breathing space. Every time I see the internet trying to rehabilitate Mercury retrograde, I roll my eyes. Some periods just suck, and Merc Ret is one of them. Staying as quiet as possible and doing an odd bit of thrift shopping is the best way I’ve found to get through it.

I am tired, however, of all the urgency influencers out there. Sitting here on earth looking up, things are always moving across the sky. We can’t react, or even respond, to everything. We can be aware of it, but sometimes, we just need to look up and watch it cycle through. Enjoy that the sky looks pretty and there’s a lot to see up there. Every season will be different not just from the other seasons, but for us as individuals. It’s great to have information, but when it’s delivered with this constant frenetic insistence (especially when the person delivering it is trying to sell you something), take it all with a grain of salt.

Taking a break from posting promotional material for my own work, and really looking at what’s out there has been informative. I’ve done a lot of blocking these past six weeks!

After the morning chores yesterday, I settled into work. I had a case of the “I don’t wannas” because what I wanted to do was to go back to bed. Too bad for me!

I got some admin done, and a decent chunk of work on BETTING MAN. Switched over to the ghostwriting, and felt like I was plodding along. I like the quality of what I’m doing, but I’m not doing it fast enough.

The Nolan Wells situation gets more and more heartbreaking. And more enraging, as MS officials just think they can keep covering it up. Holding back the man’s throat and lungs from the second autopsy is very suspicious. While tox screens might not yet be complete (they usually take at least two weeks, sometimes more), when there’s a second autopsy, they need all the bits. And now one of his “friends” is going on a right-wing podcast to justify himself. Trash, all the way around. And on top of it, cops in Madison, WI shot a Black man in the head, executing him on the street in broad daylight.

Hakeem Jeffries proved he’s colluding with the right when 6 Dems voted (the exact number needed) to approve the bill that tacked on integrating our military with Israel’s and the SAVE act. Jeffries is as corrupt as the rest of them. He and Schumer have to be removed.

And now they’re all going on vacation until the middle of September. Disgusting. And they’re still covering up what’s going on with Mitch McConnell. If he’s dead, they’re committing fraud. If they’re keeping him in a vegetative state on life support, it’s beyond grotesque. As much as I loathe McConnell, there is a sense of tragedy that no one cares enough about him as a human being to allow him a dignified death. Not his wife, not his children, not his colleagues.

I plodded along on the ghostwriting, not getting as far as I wanted. I’m okay, as far as the deadline goes, but I’d hoped to get it in a little early. No such luck, I fear. We will see how today and tomorrow go.

Trotted down to pick up my CSA box in the afternoon. It was a nice walk, not too hot and humid, and good to get me moving.

The box is glorious: two pints of cherry tomatoes, lettuce, onions, green pepper, summer squash, and carrots. I used a lot of it in a pasta primavera, adding garlic and the basil we’re growing. I kept sneaking bites of everything as I chopped it. So delicious. We are so lucky, and I am so grateful.

Sat on the porch after dinner reading and watching the world go by. I’m reading a novel by a writer well-known for nonfiction (and I’m a fan of the nonfiction), but this is their first novel. It needed a developmental edit and some work on structure. The structure is basically non-existent. There’s some lovely writing in it, but it doesn’t hold together.

Slept reasonably well until Charlotte started fussing a little after 3, and she was just impossible. I got up just before 5 and started the morning routine. Today is online meditation group (I guess we’re breaking in August?). I’ll do the usual Thursday errands after breakfast, hop on the #FreelanceFriends chat, and then get some writing done and rehearse the poems. If I can find what I want in the store, I’ll make pizza from scratch tonight. It’s cool enough.

What I get done today on the ghostwriting will help define tomorrow, if I can add something to my afternoon, or if I have to just keep my head down and work. Wish me luck!

    Waning Moon

    Pluto, Mercury, and Neptune Retrograde

    Sunny and warm

I kept thinking yesterday was Friday, but it was Wednesday, making today Thursday, and tomorrow Friday.

You can read the latest on the garden over on Gratitude & Growth here.

Yesterday started as a very Mercury Retrograde day. I got the garbage and the broken-down boxes out. I headed off to errands. Grocery shopping was fine (I only forgot a couple of things). But the checkout terminal wouldn’t work properly, and customer service had to come and sort it out from another machine. At the post office, their checkout machines didn’t work, so they couldn’t sell stamps. Very sketchy, having that happen a couple of days before the rates go up. Everything went smoothly at the liquor store. The street leading to the library was blocked, so I ended up parking in a metered spot out front. I mean, it was only a quarter (25 cents) for an hour, it’s not a huge tragedy. And the meter worked. I was there a few minutes before the library opened and decided that, instead of stressing, I would enjoy this gorgeous summer day by sitting under a maple tree and enjoying my city. So that’s what I did!

Did my drop-off/pick-up, drove home, hauled everything up the stairs and put it away. Sent off the revisions on the ghostwriting notes and got the all-clear to invoice. So that went out the door.

Settled back into the other ghostwriting project in the afternoon.

At 4, I headed down to Savvy Hive to pick up my CSA box. I go into detail about the contents over on Gratitude and Growth. Let’s just say it was amazing. I also found a really cute shirt in teal, with depictions of Jack, King, Queen playing cards. I have a set of serving dishes with Aces from each suit on them, so it’s perfect. And it was 50% off, which meant the shirt was only $10. We were joking about how it’s a hostess outfit now. With the black jacquard pants I’m making, it’ll be perfect. I have to take a photo of the dishes with the shirt and send it to Jess over at Savvy Hive today. A Mercury Retrograde score! (MR is good for thrift shopping, just not big items or electronics). It’s too heavy a piece to wear in summer, but it’ll be great for the other three seasons (I can wear a turtleneck under it in winter).

However, I rushed too much on my way back and had to stop in the heat and humidity for a break to catch my breath. I sat on a wall about a block and a half away in the shade for a few minutes, until the two scout crows came down to check out what was going on (because I always have an escort when I go anywhere on foot by myself). When I got up to finish the trip home, they stayed with me, sometimes walking next to me on the sidewalk. We got some puzzled looks from other pedestrians and people in their cars. Extra peanuts for those crows, for sure!

I made up a dish for dinner last night, which I have to write down in my recipe book this morning so I can maybe-sorta recreate it. I sauteed onion and some of the CSA scallions in olive oil, then cut up some chicken and cooked it, with a lot of fresh garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, and ginger. I used some of my vegetable stock so it wouldn’t stick or get dry. When the chicken was cooking, I chopped up the Bok choy from the CSA. After it wilted a bit, I chopped up an entire bunch of lemon basil, stirred that in, and let it cook for a couple of minutes. I served it over rice.

It was so, so, so good. The level of flavor was amazing.

In spite of all the chaos on the outer world, my little world was rather lovely yesterday. I can care about what’s going on and do my bit to make it better, and also appreciate the good things in my immediate realm.

By doing the usual Thursday errands yesterday (which was a gorgeous day, by the way), I freed up this morning to get some work done. There’s a Freelance Friends chat at noon that I want to attend. The late afternoon into the evening is stacked with a library trustees meeting, then dashing down to the other end of town to Hotel Downstreet for an art opening, then dashing home for a library cohort meeting.

Hotel Downstreet is up for sale, which makes me sad. These owners were so committed to being part of the community, not just catering to tourists, and constantly worked with galleries, the Farmers’ Market, the library, etc. I am leery of what new owners will do. I’m worried for Door Prize, the restaurant in the hotel, that’s run by some of the first people I met when I moved here.

No online meditation this morning, but we’re supposed to have it for the rest of July. We’ll see.

It’s supposed to be a little warmer today, but still not as hot as originally predicted. Fingers crossed, especially with all the running around on foot I need to do this evening.

In the meantime, it’s back to the page!

    Full Moon

    Pluto and Mercury Retrograde

Sunny and pleasant, supposed to get hot

It’s supposed to get very hot this week, and I am not looking forward to that.

Mercury is retrograde until July 23rd, and there are all sorts of other clashes happening in the heavens, and I would prefer to just take a nap.

There are things that need my attention this week, and that’s what I will do. One thing at a time, trying to get it all done. I will probably reconfigure my days depending on how hot it gets any given day.

You can read the Community Tarot Reading for the Week here. It’s an overall cheerful spread, which given what those who thrive on urgency are screaming about this week makes it feel like we can have personal respites within the overall chaos.

I have a lot of writing to do, which is a good thing, and some other things that need to be dealt with this week in various parts of my life. I’m going to try to stay cool and hydrated, and make sure my mother and the cats do the same.

We have another holiday weekend coming up at the end of the week. Half of the whatevers seem to be taking off Friday and the other half Monday, so I’m seriously considering taking both, but we’ll see how the week shakes out. Thursday is supposed to be the hottest day of the week, although they’ve walked back the 100F prediction. I hope it stays back.

I’m running fans and trying to get it as cool as possible every morning, so we have some wiggle room. Right now, it’s very pleasant here. Between that and the cooling units, we should be fine. If I need to pack up and work at the college library, I might do that, too.

One step at a time, right? Have a good start to your week.

    Waxing Moon

    Mercury Retrograde

    More snow coming in

One more day. If we can hang on by our fingernails just one more day, Mercury will go direct. And then we need a nap before moving forward.

Both winter and Mercury Retrograde feel like they will  never end right now. They’re like those corridors in horror movies, where you run and run and run, and the corridor just gets longer and longer.

You can read about the latest on Gratitude and Growth here.

I was up at 5 AM yesterday, a little earlier than usual. I’d gone to bed earlier and actually slept for 8 hours. So I was ready to be up and at ‘em. I did the full morning routine of yoga, meditation, free write (after feeding the monsters, er, cats). I ate breakfast and did the dishes. I packed my bag, ready for a day’s adventure. I scraped down the car, then found out there was a small ice mound behind my tire, so I had to inch back and forth and sideways to get over that.

But I got to the mechanic on time. . .and the part hadn’t arrived yet. The mechanic said I could leave the car and hope for the best or reschedule. It’s Mercury Retrograde, there was no way in HELL the part would have shown up today. We rescheduled for Tuesday.

Which throws off everything I needed to get done this weekend, especially when it comes to looking for a support pillar/plant stand for the sculpture, but I’ll just focus on finishing the collage and the sculpture instead. Next week, after the car is fixed, I’ll run around and look for a pedestal/repurposed plant stand in my budget. I also don’t dare put in a delivery order of some things I need until I know for sure how far above the estimate the work on the car will be. Nothing is critical, I built wiggle room into everything because of the retrograde, but I hate leaving things until the last minute.

I drove home, parked, and had a day I hadn’t expected for work, which meant I could get back to the ghostwriting and other things. And, I mean, I was happy not to be bopping around in 18 degree weather until the car was ready.

I hate cutting everything so close to the next inspection deadline, but that’s the way things are shaking out.

I put dinner in the crockpot when I got back. I’d meant to do the crockpot dinner on Tuesday and completely forgot. So I did it yesterday instead. It was okay, but not brilliant.

I slogged through email, got out an LOI, looked through some submission guidelines (I might write an article pitch in the next day or so), set up a ZOOM meeting for the weekend, did the marketing (seeing sales rise makes me more cheerful to do the day’s marketing), wanted to go back to bed but did not.

The rest of the day was about the ghostwriting. I made progress, but not as much as I hoped. Overnight, I realized how I went down the wrong trail, so I have to rip out a bunch and redo it today, plus get ahead, because it’s due tomorrow.

I wanted to put in an Instacart order today (since the car wasn’t fixed), but with 2 inches of snow coming in any minute, I don’t want to send anyone out in bad weather. I may wait until tomorrow. I was also going to do a couple of errands on foot this morning, but if the weather is nasty, I will skip them and do them all tomorrow.

I just feel backed into a corner today. So I need to shovel out, literally and metaphorically, one thing at a time.

The focus today is on the ghostwriting, although I need to do some more work on the canvas for the collage, too. I have the group online meditation (Charlotte will be happy), and then #FreelanceFriends later, so I will have a couple of breaks in the day, and then I just have to flow with it.

Tomorrow is the Spring Equinox. Let’s hope it turns a lot of things for the better.

    Waning Moon

    Jupiter and Mercury Retrograde

    Snowy and cold

    Happy end of the week!

It’s just thing after thing after thing, isn’t it?

The government is trying to cover up how many people are being killed in this illegal war they launched. They admitted the first four, then six, and now aren’t releasing casualty numbers. Congress twiddles their thumbs. A veteran protested and a sitting Senator broke his arm. Why hasn’t that dude been censored, removed, or arrested? Congress is useless. Someone online mentioned how they’re like toddlers just discovering they have toes, and in my mind, they’re not even smart enough for that!

At least Noem is fired, although her replacement is just as bad or worse. And Dems in Congress won’t do what they can and should to block confirmation. Because our Congress is both useless and complicit.

And now RFK Jr. is fighting Dunkin pastry? The person responsible for health thinks they can defeat a Boston cream doughnut? In New England, where iced coffee all year round and doughnuts are practically a religion of their own? This is where our money goes, instead of toward universal healthcare and breakthroughs to fight disease? I am so confused. Could we have some qualified people running things, please? And get rid of the unqualified? Since WE are paying for them, on every level?

The rest of the books for the contest I judge arrived on Wednesday night. The bulk of them are digital this year, and that final deadline is today, so I can really dig in over the next few weeks and make the choices. I always enjoy working on this contest. It’s lovely to discover authors I might not have found on my own.

Meditation was good, and Charlotte was happy. I did way too much admin. I put in the Instacart order. My shopper was an absolute delight, efficient, quick, kind.

I got a little under what I hoped for the day’s quota on BETTING MAN, but at least I got in some work on it.

    #FreelanceFriends was fun.

I had a good session on the ghostwriting, a really good session. I think, today, I will be where I wanted to be, and then on Monday, I can finish character profiles and do a polish, and get it out on time on Tuesday. Fingers crossed.

I nearly cried when I realized we spring forward with the clocks on Sunday. I hate springing forward. It throws me off for weeks.

We had snow again overnight. Not as much as predicted, but enough for the plows to be out, so I guess I’m doing more shoveling later on. Sigh. But the plow people have been wonderful, and I’m so grateful we have them. Such a big difference from when we were on Cape, and it was always a clusterfuck.

My back is still giving me problems. I’m grumpy. I’m still trying to get a damn appointment to get the car fixed (and yes, it has to be at that mechanic).

I’m really tired with all the “spiritual” (um, nope) “influencers” (bite me) trying to gaslight us about how “good” Mercury Retrograde actually is, so that they can sell things and profit from said gaslighting. Like we don’t get enough of that from our government. Mercury Retrograde sucks, period. It creates obstacles and makes everything harder than it needs to be. Its reputation is well-deserved. Not everything has a positive aspect. Sometimes, things just suck, and during Mercury Retrograde, they suck even more. It’s not a personal, spiritual failure to be honest when something sucks. And buying your system/cure/whatever for $49.99 is not going to fix it.

The Block button is my friend.

I’m certainly a Grumpypants to start the weekend, aren’t I? I better sing myself the little Grumpypants song I made up and get over myself. Hopefully, things will level out over the weekend.

I need to make an adjustment in my schedule, whether that starts today or I set Monday as the start. I’ve fallen into some bad habits, and need to go on a gentle course correction. But at least I figured out where I went off-path, and that’s a useful step. It’s nothing major, just going back to something that worked for a long time, then didn’t work for a bit, but I think will work again going forward. Until it doesn’t, and then I will adjust again.

The Glow Show opens at the gallery tonight, and a cohort member has a performance at another gallery. I’d like to go, but I honestly don’t know if my back will hold up, so I will see how I’m doing near the end of the workday, and make decisions from there.

Not sure what the weekend will bring. Housework, because there’s always housework. Maybe some planting. If the light is good, some sewing. If it ever stops snowing and we actually get a spring, I’ll have to turn over from the big, heavy sweaters to spring sweaters, and then, in a couple of months, turn over the closet to summer. This weekend will also, I hope, have lots of reading, for pleasure, for research, for reviews, and contest entries.

Have a good weekend, and we’ll catch up on the other side!
