My list of master mariners is here - several to add. Related to four directly or by marriage. The family groupings interest me, not least the Bruces. #OnePlaceStudies #Orkney #MerchantSeamen https://janealogy.co.uk/north-walls-and-brims/merchant-seamen/
I should add that two older brothers were Master Mariners too. One married my great grandfather’s cousin, and was lost at sea on what was to have been his last voyage before retiring. I wonder if that prompted younger brother to go ashore? #OnePlaceStudies #Orkney #MerchantSeamen
Not the most profitable day but I’ve found yet another Master Mariner from my #OnePlaceStudy area in #Orkney. Started as a ship’s carpenter but went on to get his Master’s ticket. Died in Newcastle having gone back to carpentery (on land I think) in later years. #MerchantSeamen
@SocOnePlaceStudies @cassmob Checking all 597 1861 Census people is a big job indeed but getting there slowly. A good many #MerchantSeamen
