On my mental soundtrack on this Mother's Day: the queer chorus I sing with performed this song earlier this year, and it hit me right between the eyes emotionally. The pain of my parents emotionally distancing themselves from me as I became ever more assertive about being my true queer self still rankles almost 50 years later.
"I come from good people
I have journeyed far from them
My mother and I are two of a kind
And I wear my father's face
I have left them far behind
We will meet in another place" -

On my mental soundtrack today: in honor of Turtles co-founder Mark "The Phlorescent Leech" Volman, RIP today age 78, I present one of my favorite of Frank Zappa's compositions, featuring Mark and his musical partner Howard Kaylen in their Flo and Eddy guise.

On my mental soundtrack this Labor Day is an old favorite of mine, one of the wittier takedowns of modern industrial culture that I've heard in recent years.

Most emphatically on my mental soundtrack this evening as I embark on a deep dive into early Roxy Music. This live performance is beautifully controlled chaos - and Bryan Ferry and the whole band are just fascinating to watch.

So I'm again/still obsessing over drag king - the logistics of how I could pull it off as a disabled person (could I hold a crowd's attention while doing my entire act seated?) plus making my musical tastes fit into the drag scene. For example: I was checking out some Roxy Music videos and now I'm jazzed by the idea of performing to a medley of Do the Strand and Both Ends Burning (they're even in the same key and tempo!). Not sure if the world is ready for a non-skinny all-seated Bryan Ferry homage, but part of me is tempted by the idea of rolling onstage in a tailored suit and modish black hair wig, taking a seat onstage, and kicking into
"There's a new sensation
A fabulous creation
A danceable solution
To teenage revolution..."
I dunno ... what do you folks out in Mastodon-land think of this madness?#drag #DragKing #RoxyMusic #BryanFerry

On my mental soundtrack today: Randy Newman's brilliant skewering of his era's edition of US-style fascism - love how he calls them out in this live performance - and a painfully relevant song for these times.

In honor of Pride Month, here's the beginnings of a list of songs I'd love to sing in the Drag King karaoke bar of my dreams (in addition to the LGBTQ+ anthems I've posted recently):
--David Bowie, "Life on Mars?"
--Todd Rundgren, "Real Man"
--The Doors, "LA Woman"Please feel free to comment with other songs you would add to this list!

Today's entry in my mental soundtrack to celebrate Pride in spite of everything damn it. Pete Shelley's audacious call to revolutionary queer love, with its equally audacious video.

On my mental soundtrack for Pride Month: Jimmy Somerville's gorgeous falsetto ringing out in protest against queerphobia, set to a video that broadens the protest to call out 1980s Thatcherist economic oppression. Both of which messages, sadly, apply to current events in the US.
