Many photos and video clips illustrate the glacier's peculiarities.
As I understand it , the glacier is really two glaciers, a steep one on the mountain side, and down a cliff, a horizontal one in a trough-like valley. Its glacial tongue "moves",as glaciers do, and also forms a stopper or dam before the valley's exit.When the steep mountain-side based glacier melts in summer, the water fills the trough below the ice of the valley glacier.
There's a gif from webcam snapshots, showing how during melt season, the glacier's surface rises from the rising water beneath. I had to watch it 4-5 times before I understood what I was seeing.
Suddenly, in August, the rugged glacier surface drops by a few metres.
And then the forever-loop restarts the clip again in May, showing the glacier at that lower surface level where it had dropped to in August.
Which indicates that this filling up of the subglacial basin followed by sudden drainage is a regular occurrence.I misunderstood the use of the word "dam" to be manmade. So I write it just as a heads-up: There is no man-made dam shielding the outside world from what's happening in the glacier basin.

Mendenhall Glacier
I just love how perfectly mother nature at times sets up a landscape that can be truly considered an abstract natural landscape. The purple and brown rock with some green cover mixed with the whites, grays, and blacks turn this into a natural kaleidoscope.
On top of that, the ice seems to snake it's way around the brown rock perfectly dissects the image.
