#MemphisPD said Saturday that it would shut down the the so-called #ScorpionUnit that had employed the five officers charged in the death of #TyreNichols as fallout from the brutal beating continues. A day after video footage of Nichols being beaten was released, a broadening web of investigations had expanded to scrutinize additional local authorities.

I cannot even describe those videos which shows Tyre Nichols being beaten so viciously and mercilessly. I have watched many truly ghastly vids for work and have never seen brutality at all approaching this level from a civilian police force.
I hope the palpable horror, disgust and abhorrence this senseless brutality engenders will lead to a real and meaningful overhaul in policing. Policing needs to be turned on it’s head. US police unions enable this ever escalating violence in policing by shielding violent goons who shouldn’t have a badge.
Policing should be by consent, not force and should certainly not involve handing badges to those who’d enact a bloodlust like that seen in Tyre’s encounters with those sworn Memphis officers. ‘Driving while Black’ is a real and frank danger for many young Black men in US.
I can’t imagine the pain Tyre’s family are experiencing and I hope that the senseless beating and murder of their beloved son, grandson, brother, uncle, is not going to be forgotten as just another young Black life lost to police violence.
