Getting the MIL ready for transition from #AssistedLiving to #MemoryCare. Finding out some of her 2 am shenanigans is kinda scary. Yes, she needs to move. Now we have to ease her into it without her deciding to embrace religion just so she can call us the antichrist.

Threads of Memory, Threads of Grace
Where nothing is done, yet nothing is undone.
Pause. Everything has been on pause, a hiatus to focus on more pressing matters at the present moment. I’m tired and rundown, but at the same time, I’m filled with energy to move forward, propelled by an unknown force to continue even in the most stressful moments.
If someone had told me what this year would bring, I wouldn’t have envisioned this would be how I’d handle things. It’s been a wild ride watching each moment unfold in my exhaustion. My patience may wane, yet there is a compassion behind the cloud of frustration, for this is life – a deeply mysterious and path-filled with suffering and craving.
Photo by Brett Sayles on Pexels.comI watch the veil of memory become clouded, in disarray, fleeting moments of fantasical, entangled thought dispelled by the light of the past as I guide awareness back to now through memory. I watch the partner’s frustration, fear, and anger arise, unable to cope with the reality of the moment.
My memories are also not precise. They often cloud the moment with judgment, diluting the magic of newness and casting shadows on my experiences, shaped by nostalgia, regret, or longing.
Yet love is unconditional and boundless, swaddling the loss, the hurt, the fear, and the pain, allowing a glimpse of the truth. The bigger picture, the heart of the matter, this entire journey, this life we live in, material trappings fettered away. In our most challenging moments, we discover our strength, understand hope, fully appreciate unconditional love, and know that this journey is rife with meaning.
There are moments when there is no longer separation between the doer and the deed, the actor and the act; it is all one. It is a miraculous dance of souls asleep to the true nature of being bound by karma, awakening slowly one by one, understanding the true nature of being in the meaning behind each moment. Moksha.
“Nothing is done, yet nothing remains undone.”
~Lao Tzu
I let go of the fleeting wisps of memory and touch the sacred, now unfurling with raw emotion, learning not to push away but to feel deeply the nuance, the realness, and the beauty of this life.

Harvard’s research suggests lithium deficiency may drive Alzheimer’s—and that carefully restoring it (especially with lithium orotate) could one day help prevent or even reverse dementia-related brain changes. 🧠💪
💡 The promise: Early diagnosis + potential treatment.
⏳ The catch: More research and clinical trials are needed before this becomes reality.#AlzheimersResearch #BrainHealth #LithiumDiscovery #NeuroScience #MemoryCare

Honoring a beloved mentor with Alzheimer's
When Clay Morton was a student at the University of Arkansas, he was greatly inspired by his geology professor, Dr. Walt Manger, who became a mentor and a guiding light as Morton pursued a career as a high school science teacher. Now, years later, after Manger was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, Morton is striving to preserve as much of his former professor's brilliance as possible.

Today I begin the physical process of moving my 96 y/o mother into a #memorycare residence, with help from #family. We’ll set up her room with the furniture basics, assemble a bed frame, etc., assess how everything fits, and adjust the plan to reality. There are a few more steps over the next week+ until we bring her to her new space and support her moving in and getting settled. #dementia #alzheimers #bittersweet So many #feels. #familymatters #multigenerational #life

I've been immersed in the issues associated with aging parents and the feelings these issues engender. I've also been writing, slowly but consistently. Which is to say I've been almost entirely absent from all my social media platforms, not just mastodon, for the last few months. But #Iamwriting a long #novelette.
And I am moving through all those feelings that come with having a parent with #alzheimers who has reached a point where they need the 24hr care of #memorycare #assistedliving. -
Dear #fediverse,
Do I know anyone that knows someone working in computer usability, particularly accessibility for elders?
Discussing an important challenge with a friend; how do we get folks with cognitive impairments, like dementia and Alzheimer’s, to recognize visitors via telepresence? After many reminders that the “lady on the tv nurse isn’t taking to you”, this population is having a hard time believing that the person on the laptop screen is really there to talk to them.

There’s a range of jobs that rely on routine, predictability, and the ability to respond appropriately when things go sideways. Elder care/memory care is all routine and low key, until something starts to skid. Then you have to be able to respond quickly. This week is all routines. Which my still recovering from concussion brain is happy about. Yay for the q word at work. #memorycare

This is a bit of comics journaling about visiting my Mom recently. It's just something I drew for myself, with no particular thought to sharing it. But I know a lot of you are slowly losing parents to dementia, or already have, so I'm posting it here for those of you who can relate.
I wrote more about the challenges, & also the unexpected *gifts* of dementia here, if you're interested:

I can't help but think of the book "Are You My Mother?" when my Mom asks if I'm her daughter. Here we are, she and I, navigating yet another role-reversal. But that dynamic is familiar territory for us.
If you can't read my handwriting, I've transcribed all of it in the image description below.
