In February, 2008, while campaigning in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Barack Obama was given by my first wife and mother of our three kids a KIA bracelet with our son Ryan’s name on it. The bracelet and Ryan’s name would come up that November in the final presidential debate between Obama and John McCain. After Obama was elected, he continued to wear Ryan’s bracelet for a time. I just wish we could have leadership like his back in the White House.

May 1, 1865 - Memorial Day was started by the formerly enslaved in Charleston, South Carolina to honor 257 dead Union Soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp. They dug up the bodies and worked for 2 weeks to give them a proper burial as gratitude for fighting for their freedom. They then held a parade of 10,000 people led by 2,800 Black children where they marched, sang and celebrated.
