  2. Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia)

After photographing the American Goldfinch, I wandered through the open grassy spaces of the municipal complex. It was quiet and still, except for the occasional rustle of leaves. The grounds are more spacious than they appear from the road, but my curiosity pulled me toward the edge—where the mown lawn gave way to wildness.

There, at the boundary, a thicket of shrubs tangled around the trunks of a few tall trees. On the other side, I could see a line of houses. A dog barked once and then stopped. It was the kind of quiet that makes bird sounds carry.

That’s when I heard it—a sharp, sweet burst of melody. The Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) is often easier to hear than to see, and this one was no exception. I paused and scanned the underbrush. It took a minute, but eventually, I spotted the sparrow perched on a bare twig, puffed up and singing with its whole body.

These are the moments I love most—when something ordinary becomes radiant through attention. A common bird, a simple place, and yet, it felt like a discovery.
