Understanding #Japan

Researching for something else, as is often the case ;), I came across this short #history of #Japan from 1850-1950 explaining the transition from 700 years of warlord/#knight* (#samurai) rule (#shogunate) to the imperial #Meiji #Restoration, which oversaw the #modernization + #industrialization of #Japan within just 50 years:

*I have never seen the word "knight" used in a historic context regarding Japan. I find the term quite fitting, though.

#OnThisDay in 1867 in #Japan signaled the end of the #Tokugawa #shogunate (徳川幕府) (1603-1867). The shogun was the military and practical leader of Japan. #OTD Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the 15th Tokugawa shogun (known for his reform efforts), tendered his resignation to the Emperor after fellow daimyo (who feared his success at those reforms as well as international interference in Japanese military and politics), effectively beginning the #Meiji Restoration (and the Boshin War). #history #histodons
