  1. Not quite #StandingStoneSunday but it’s a broad church, so here are a couple of photographs of the tumulus de Colombiers-sur-Seulles, the oldest surviving stone monument in the Calvados region of Normandy. It dates from about 4,000 BCE. The whole site has a very tranquil setting.

The first image shows the entrance into the funerary chamber which is about 2.5 metres wide and has 6 remaining orthostats or upright stones. Charred and broken bones were found in this chamber on excavation.

The second image is a wider shot showing the whole of the long barrow itself, which is impressive at about 60 metres in length, and about 18 metres wide at the eastern end and about 9 metres wide at the western end, nearest the foreground of the photograph. At this western end, there are two "blocking" stones which might suggest another chamber here, with its entrance here.

  4. New study reveals how Stonehenge’s Altar Stone crossed ancient Britain

A massive sandstone block at the heart of Stonehenge has puzzled archaeologists for decades. Known as the Altar Stone, the six-ton megalith stands apart from the monument’s other stones because of its unusual origin. Researchers now believe the stone came from northeast Scotland, around 700 kilometers from Stonehenge..
