大部分全年性一年多代的獨居蜂繁殖期很長，幾乎一整年都可以記錄到雄蟲，只是數量有不同的高低峰，反應該世代的長度與週期。這樣的繁殖策略也有利族群體抗環境波動，但由於整年的資源分布與組成隨時序變化，通常廣食性物種更常呈現這種世代特徵。(然而生物的習性是演化最終所呈現的現象，而無法驗證其中的因果: 不知生物是因為有廣食潛力，才發展一年多代的生活史；還是因為生命週期短，所以篩選出能利用多種資源的廣食性。驗證這個因果邏輯，目前能想到的只有透過親源分析推測在近源物種的共同祖先先具備多世代還是廣食性的特徵。)
發生期集中且一年一代的獨居蜂，雄蟲只在發生期的初期活動，快速完成交配後死亡。比較明顯的是迴條蜂，能看到在巢區周圍出現上百隻雄蟲盤旋。黃斑蜂也有大量雄蟲爆發的模式，不過性比偏向雌多雄少，而非理論上配對效率最高的 1:1。通常物種的性比受到兩性的生殖投資、性擇模式、同性競爭、性別衝突、族群密度(相遇率)共同影響。我們觀察到雄蜂主要活動時間為早上七點至九點，通常在離地60公分的高度盤旋，並趁雌蜂返回巢洞正要降落前，跟在雌蜂的後方左右晃動，並伺機抓住雌蜂試圖交配。若成功可能持續2至5分鐘的交尾行為，雌蜂有時則會掙扎擺脫雄蜂。九點之後雄蜂大多不見蹤影，目前仍不確定雄蜂活動完整的日週期。
雌蜂投入大量的時間與能量築巢，而雄蜂的生殖投資則明顯更少，因此雌蜂需要減少交配次數，節省時間建造更多巢室，才能產生更多子代；雄蜂則只要增加交配的次數，便可增加自身基因傳播的機率。大量的雄蜂將降低雌蜂的適應性，便是基於生殖投資不對等導致的性別適應衝突。此外目前沒有觀察到明顯的雄性競爭與雌性選擇，且交配事件主要發生於雄蟲爆發的前兩周，即多數雌蜂處於處女雌蟲的階段，後期雄蟲減少後雌性的反應主要在擺脫雄蟲的交配干擾。我對此的解釋為黃斑蜂的兩性皆無明顯性擇條件，主要依靠相遇率決定交配對象，與迴條蜂、蜉蝣、白蟻等類似。且由於雄性可多次交配，雌蜂又可孤雌生殖，性比雖然偏向雌多雄少，卻無雌性競爭。
第三周之後的雄蟲數量低於10隻，雌蟲大多都已完成交配，偏好躲避雄蟲干擾，而雄蟲擇偏好強制交配。這種配對模式與時空分布，類似多種蜻蜓與蝶類。然而儘管雄蜂仍能不斷干擾雌蜂，昆蟲的儲精囊結構讓雌蜂得以從中選擇偏好的雄蟲精莢，作為產卵的素材，此現象在許多雁鴨科與昆蟲的研究中都有紀錄。因此即使沒有求偶行為，仍然可能存在隱性的雌性選擇，蜂類基於單雙套的性別決定系統(受精卵發育為雌蟲，未受精發育為雄蟲)，能更進一步的主動調節性比。因此黃斑蜂的交配模式與意願隨時序轉變，且由於沒有明顯的性擇不需要大量的候選雄蟲與配對效率，加上雄蟲干擾的負面效應，稍低的雄性比，更有利族群適應。此外我推測雌蜂可能會根據該年的食物豐度以及受雄蟲干擾的頻率，改變子代的性比，理論上能在跨年度的環境資料中看到性比產生相應的動態。而其他獨居蜂也可能有這種機制。
我今年剛好沒遇到雄蟲爆發的時期，沒有現場觀察與影像紀錄，我只拍到一張掉落在地上的交配照片，上面那隻有黃色臉斑觸角微彎的為雄蟲。雄蟲從頸部後方咬住雌蟲，並用六隻腳固定。以前我拍到的蜂類交配時間都不長，這次有充分的時間微調打光和角度，可惜蟲不會配合你的構圖，背景有點醜，也沒有從斜前方拍的視角。不過i和與我們多年合作的生態紀錄片導演，先前都有不錯的一手資料，聽說有雌雄追逐的影片，希望能盡快看到導演的成果。

In my opinion the best bee butts belong to wool carder bees (_Anthidium_). They are just so round and cute and completely unmistakable.
Like other bees in the megachilid family, they collect pollen under their abdomens, not on their legs. They also scrape fuzz off the leaves of plants like lamb's ear (_Stachys byzantina_) for their nests, hence the name. They seem to like plants in the mint family in general.

Like other bees in the megachilid family, they collect pollen under their abdomens, not on their legs. They also scrape fuzz off the leaves of plants like lamb's ear (_Stachys byzantina_) for their nests, hence the name. They seem to like plants in the mint family in general.
