I made a full edition of my alfalfa leafcutting bee (Megachile rotundata) cutting a leaf. The alfalfa leafcutting bee is a solitary bee originally from Europe which has been spread to all continents but Antartica for agriculture. In North America it has become feral and widespread. 🧵1/2

I believe this is #Megachile xylocopoides, the carpenter-mimic leafcutter #bee. But I'm calling it the void bee :-)

Unlike the better known, and imported honeybee, the Leafcutter bees are solitary and make no honey, but they are vital pollinators who play an important role in the ecosystem. They are found throughout the US and southern Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific. 🧵1/2

This work features 2 large linocuts of 2 leaf cutter bees: #Megachile relativa & Megachile brevis. These linocuts are made on collaged Japanese washi papers & cellophane to capture the colours in their bodies and wings. Each print has its own array of leaf & petal prints from leaves and petals used by leaf cutter bees from my garden. The plants used include raspberries, roses (leaves and petals), lily of the valley, lilac, lemon balm, ash, thicket creeper, round-leaved Crane's bill & more.

@loren I have Australia's largest bee for you: Megachile monstrosa.
Marked as sensitive as it may appear scary, but this solitary bee uses her huge mandibles to dig a nest in solid wood.
In the last photo, you can see her enlarging a knot hole while a gasteruption wasp (parasitic) waits for an opportunity to lay her egg on the bee's egg. Wood shavings were falling on me as I took this photo from below.
