  2. #892 Henrietta Leyser - Medieval Women: A Social History of Women in England 450-1500. Phoenix Press, an imprint of Orion Books Ltd, London, for The Book People Ltd, St Helens, 2002, 1st edition, 4th impression, reissued. #HenriettaLeyser #PhoenixPress #Medieval #MedievalWomen #BookOfTheDay

  3. Last week I travelled to London in a whirlwind trip to see the Mike Kelley show at the Tate Modern & Medieval Women show at the British Library, and the new Hunterian Museum. A report back at my blog:

  4. More thoughts on Eleanor Rykener in the BL's #MedievalWomen exhibition. Her inclusion is majorly important, not just because of *her* importance as a beacon of trans visibility in the historical record, but also the current anti-trans environment in the UK & elsewhere

  5. An Italian ivory comb, c1370, depicting a crowned woman with pennants flanked by kneeling knights, flirting couples and onlookers, photographed recently in the 'Medieval Women' exhibition at the British Library. #MedievalMonday #MedievalWomen

  6. The Parisian author Christine de Pizan presents a manuscript of her stories and poems to Queen Isabeau of Bavaria, an illustration from the Book of the Queen, c1410, photographed recently in the 'Medieval Women' exhibition at the British Library. #MedievalMonday #MedievalWomen

  7. @yvonne Thanks for that interesting article by Prof Joëlle Rollo-Koster, which draws attention to the documentary treasures in store for a new generation of historians while perhaps understating the wealth of evidence accumulated by her own!

  8. #AnneOfGloucester grew up with the library of #Pleshey Castle, commissioned & collected by the #bibliophile #Bohun family, & catalogued in 1397 when her father was arrested. #WomensHistory prompts reflection on household culture, role models, generational influence - & how both we & kings may struggle with inner demons.

  9. Thinking about #MedievalWomen also casts new light on the men. #JohnOfGaunt gave generous tips to messengers bringing news of his brother's babies, & not only for the firstborn son. When #AnneOfGloucester arrived he rode over to #Pleshey, bestowed lavish gifts, & tipped the 'rokestare' who rocked the baby in her cradle.

  10. I've been enjoying 'The Granddaughters of Edward III' by #KathrynWarner, thanks to a review copy from #NetGalley. Two queens, several scandals, descendants with competing claims leading to the #WarsOfTheRoses. Many history books focus on half the population; examining what we know of the women provides new perspective. 🧵 1/

12. 👵🏻: ‘…In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night…’
👦🏻: “Wait! Why is there a female shepherd?”
👵🏻: ‘Why not? The sheep don’t care.’
