"XTC in the XIV and Vox Vulgaris bring medieval ecstasy at Fylkingen! Two acts with their own unorthodox approach to #medieval #music join forces and perform a super-set together on October 23.
12 musicians and singers in a variety of setups present music pounded out from earth, garage floors, and cathedral marble. To open the evening, there will be #microtonal beats with Óskar Freyr Guðnason."

"Vox Vulgaris are playing today at Spice H2O’s medieval-themed spiritual night. We managed to get a short interview with this highly intriguing band, who make psychedelic and danceable music on medieval instruments.
...
Q: Who in the band would survive the longest if you were thrown back in time to the year 1350?"

Let me begin the time on #Fediverse with #music. In #Dinan, an unnamed musician brought old sounds to life - nakers, recorder, shepherd’s horn, ankle bells and even a desk bell. Her street workshop drew passersby into music, history and curiosity. She earns a living through her craft while keeping old sounds alive, giving them new listeners and, perhaps, new possibilities.
Does anyone know her and the string instrument she was playing?

The recent mention of Guillaume de Machaut by @scholar_farmer in her new #introduction reminded me of this album recorded by David Munrow and The Early Music Consort of London in the seventies:

I'm neither #musicologist nor #medievalist, but have enjoyed this music for decades.

In addition, I still mourn the untimely death of David Munrow.

🎶 Tomorrow is already the final day of the Utrecht Summer School on Hildegard of Bingen. Time really flew!

It's been an inspiring week filled with medieval chant, wonderful teachers, fascinating discussions, and lovely people. 💚

We'll be closing the week with a small concert tomorrow at 16:00 in the Pieterskerk in Utrecht. Everyone is welcome, so if you're nearby, do come and listen! 🎵

Ever wonder what was ringing out on the other side of the Mediterranean while Josquin and Munrow's Europe sang its polyphony? Medieval Arab-Andalusian music took an entirely different path — heterophony over counterpoint, tarab over architecture, oral transmission over notation. A look at Safi al-Din's 17-tone system and Eduardo Paniagua's reconstructions of al-Andalus.

Guillaume Dufay wrote around 87 secular chansons and only 7 complete masses — yet he's remembered first as a mass composer. This piece traces how English sweet harmony crossed to Burgundy via Dunstable, how Dufay folded his own love-song melody into the sacred Mass Ordinary, and compares two very different recordings

Why does 800-year-old church music sound like ambient/drone today? New post comparing two ECM recordings of 12th-century Parisian polyphony — Trio Mediæval's anonymous, all-female Stella Maris and the Hilliard Ensemble's Perotin — and what they share with Eno's "as ignorable as it is interesting."

My band Vox Vulgaris just released a new track, slightly different from our usual #medieval #folk #music.
It's a remix/rework on IT'S ON U by the electro-punk-rap group Nora Sharks feat. Luthando Sound, released as the B-side of their single.

We basically replaced their electronic production with our own traditional, acoustic instruments: two kinds of #bagpipes, recorder, tzouras, buisine, davul, qraqeb... and then we put their rappers back on top of it.
I think we arrived at a rather unconventional sound!

Yesterday I played this set at a small release party at Tropiska Föreningen in the Stockholm suburb Örnsberg.
Beginning with a mashup of Sunn O))) and my own band Vox Vulgaris. Continuing for over two hours with a sometimes chaotic mix of #idm, #breakbeat, #reggaeton, #acid, #tribe, #grime, #electro, #jungle, #footwork... even some unreleased #medievalmusic by Vox Vulgaris!

What does a singing bear have to do with Chaucer?

A lot, it turns out.

Together with Jennifer S. Carnell (HMML), we trace how the Marian chant Alma redemptoris mater shaped medieval ideas about learning — from schoolrooms to miracles to manuscript images.

We were visited by Maria Hackl, a #music #archaeologist, who shed light on a fascinating recent discovery:
a small medieval bone flute.

While there are many depictions of #medieval instruments, it’s far less common for the original objects to survive. Instrument makers used materials that were readily available — This flute was likely made from the leg bone of a goose!

This medieval fair of Hierges was tons of fun! Thank you to the Companions of the White Wolf for inviting me. I was happy to meet again with old friends.
I'm a bit sad that sickness shortened my attending the festival. Let's make it longer next time!
