Mobile Suite Gundam Federation vs Zeon with Derek Van Dyke (Super Deluxe GamesCast, Castle Bravo)
Prepare your beam sabers and polish your Zaku helmets-this episode of Play Comics is about to launch straight into the Universal Century! We’re diving headfirst into the PS2 classic Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation vs Zeon, where the only thing more intense than the space battles is trying to pronounce “RX-78-2” three times fast.
Joining the fray is none other than Derek Van Dyke from Super Deluxe GamesCast and Castle Bravo, who’s here to help us decide once and for all: Is it better to fight for the Federation, or is life just more fun in a mono-eyed mobile suit? Expect hot takes, cooler mobile suits, and at least one attempt to dodge a colony drop with nothing but sheer podcasting bravado.
So grab your joystick, pick a side, and get ready for a barrage of wit, wisdom, and way too many references to Newtypes. The One Year War has never sounded this entertaining.
Learn such things as:
- How real is the science of Gundam?
- Do you really have to play as one of the characters to have a game that feels right?
- If I thought of a story arc that already existed, does that make me a genius or just guilty of pre-plagarism?
- And so much more!
You can find Derek on BlueSky and of course as part of the Super Deluxe GamesCast and Castle Bravo.

Mobile Suit Gundam Encounters in Space with George (Shortbox Summary)
This week on Play Comics, we’re taking you on a high-speed tour through Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space, a PS2 classic that’s equal parts thrilling dogfight simulator and love letter to Universal Century lore. From piloting iconic mobile suits to reenacting pivotal battles from the One Year War, this game has everything a Gundam fan could ask for—except ground-based combat (but hey, who needs dirt when you’ve got asteroids?).
Joining us for this cosmic adventure is George from Shortbox Summary, who brings his signature wit and deep knowledge of pop culture to the discussion. Together, we’ll explore what makes Encounters in Space stand out among Gundam games, share our favorite moments from its sprawling story modes, and maybe even speculate about Zeon’s questionable interior design choices. Strap in—it’s going to be a bumpy ride through the stars!
Learn such things as:
- Did George really say starting with SD Gundam is a viable option for me?
- If you can’t find a character you like here, are you even trying?
- Zoomy zoomy, shooty shooty giant robots got big booties.
- And so much more!
You can find George on Bluesky @shortboxsummary.bsky.social and of course over at Shortbox Summary.

This week, we’re strapping into our mobile suits and diving headfirst into the pixelated battlefield of Gundam Wing: Endless Duel on the Super Famicom. Prepare for a high-octane journey through the cosmos as we dissect this classic fighting game based on the legendary Mobile Suit Gundam franchise.

These two are back by popular demand, ready to share their insights, banter, and perhaps a few heated debates about their favorite Gundam pilots and mobile suits.
Billy is a seasoned fighting game player who has mastered the intricacies of Endless Duel’s combat system, while Erinn is a die-hard Gundam fan with an encyclopedic understanding of the series’ lore and mecha designs. Together, they bring a unique perspective to the discussion, blending gameplay analysis with a genuine appreciation for the source material. Their chemistry and friendly banter are sure to keep the conversation engaging and entertaining throughout the episode.
Learn such things as:

- Is this finally the game where having a plot of “Everyone fights” actually works?
- How does Papa Roach play into any of this?
- And so much more!

As if they don't have enough problems, MediaWorks is investigating the possible hacking of data belonging to 2.461 million NZ citizens. That's half the country!
The data being sold on the dark web came from website competition entries. The hacker boasts that he has names, home addresses, mobile numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, home phone numbers, user postal codes, user genders and user IDs for almost two and a half million kiwis.

This week we’re blasting off into outer space to take a look back at the classic PS1 fighting game Gundam Battle Assault. Released in North America in 2000, this game brought the action-packed combat of the popular Gundam anime franchise to PlayStation gamers.
Our special guest this episode is Karrington Martin from the fantastic K&K Indie Gaming Corner podcast. Karrington is a huge Gundam fan and will provide expert insight into the lore behind the game’s mobile suits and storylines. We’ll discuss how Gundam was a part of his life growing up and how the timing of the North American release made for some interesting thoughts.
From the slower than you’d expect paced arcade-style gameplay to the impressively animated sprite work, Gundam Battle Assault was a technical marvel on the PlayStation. We’ll analyze the combat mechanics, graphics, and modes that made it a classic among mech fighting games. And we’ll debate where it ranks among other Gundam games and mech fighters on the original PlayStation.
So power up your beam sabers and launch your verniers because we’re taking control of some epic Gundams today with our guest Karrington Martin! Strap in and enjoy this action-packed episode of Play Comics!
Learn such things as:
- Did any kids back then know about the heartbreak they were getting into?
- Does it matter if you don’t get the first game of a series?
- How can you mix together such a roster of characters who have little, if any, interaction in the source material?
- That Transformers Beast Wars episode that we talked about
- And so much more!
You can find Karrington at K&K Indie Gaming podcast website. You can also find him on Twitter @Desertfury90.

I didn’t expect #DuncanGarner to be back on social media after the nastiness on #TheBirdSite. He quit 7 years ago because of it. I’m enjoying his podcast, #DuncanGarner #EditorInChief. I posted about #Mastodon on one of his #Facebook #Posts, because he is a journalist that built me up when he was on #TodayFM and #TheAMShow, because he is fighting for New Zealanders and big issues. Now I hope he #JoinMastodon, however, the accounts on the other platforms must’ve been created by #MediaWorks #Team.

@BobLefridge
I am probably not the only one NOT interested in anything #Mediaworks puts out. That's likely to be at the heart of it. The product life of their old-fashioned formats is coming to an end, in particular for bias, often reactionary, opinion making and sensationalistic lazy headline reporting there is only so much appetite, most of it is already met multiple times over.
And, as Mau writes, there isn't really a problem for journalists, it's for the owners of the private networks. -
The shutdown of Today FM is Mediaworks admitting its best days are behind it
I guess they shut it down today because it was the last day of the month, and it works better for the beancounters. Just imagine if they did it tomorrow April 1st.😀
-
US-owned #Mediaworks sent me some weird survey email but I’ve never signed up to anything that they own. According to the preferences, a publication I can download from them is ‘EDG—Netsky Morrinsville’. I’ve never heard of this, or of Netsky, and I’ve never been to Morrinsville.
Just wrote a very polite email to their privacy officer to ask for my details to be removed. It all sounds very fishy. -
Mediaworks Chief Executive Cam Wallace admits he's proudly team Luxon. He's just one of the reasons why Mediaworks is all but unwatchable these days.
-
The story of #Mediaworks is a classic example of everything that's gone wrong with media management in #Aotearoa over the last 40 years.

#NewsHub.co.nz is the website for the newsroom for the #MediaWorks empire, including #TV3 and a number of commercial radio stations. As well as mediaworks.nz, they serve scripts from 4 third-party domains, including trackers from:
* adobetm.com
* googlesyndication.com
* googletagservices.com
* taboola.comThey emit an estimated 1.25g of carbon per page view - low compared to other NZ news and politics sites - despite using dirty energy for hosting:
https://www.websitecarbon.com/website/www-newshub-co-nz-home-html/ -
At present, most of our commercial newsrooms are owned by foreign media empires like the Australian #NineEntertainment, which owns most of our newspapers via its holding in #Stuff.co.nz, or shadowy "#PrivateEquity" companies like #OaktreeCapital who control a number of #NZ TV channels via its ownership in #Mediaworks. Many of these companies are looking to sell some or all of their NZ media "assets" because they're not particularly profitable. Could they #ExitToCommunity as #Scoop.co.nz did?
