  1. THE ORANGE WAVE? 🍊

I watched Four Corners on One Nation last night and found myself laughing.

Here is a party asking Australians to trust it with power. Former insiders raise questions about how it is run, its finances and how much say its members have. So Steve Cannane tries to ask the people in charge.

James Ashby, One Nation’s national director, tells him to fuck off.

That was the moment for me. They can talk endlessly about “the people,” but apparently the people aren’t entitled to answers when the questions get specific.

It reminded me of Trump’s America: grievance is offered as proof of leadership, and scrutiny is treated as an attack. I can understand Australians being fed up with the major parties. I cannot understand why that makes One Nation the answer.

  3. We know that living in the current age of social media is a largely negative experience.

We know that mainstream media appears to be increasingly unanswerable to anyone.

None of this is good for our mental health, but there have been victims that have paid with their lives, as in the case of Jason #Arday.

While it’s easy to say we want change - it’s harder to articulate what that change should look like.

Russell Jones makes a good start…

  4. I recall from my teenage years in Japan feeling unsettled when reporters would press someone about some private matter as “public interest” or that “the people deserve to know”. Why? We don’t need to know everything about someone. Even if they have some public profile. Where’s the dignity? Where’s the respect? I still feel wrong that some journalists are insisting that the Arday story was of public interest. Why?

  5. Controversial #press reporter Max Blumenthal wants answers after US #BorderPatrol seized his #cellphones upon return from trip abroad but not his laptop. While US government eventually returned the communication devices a week later, many questions remain about basic journalistic freedom and just how the devices may have been compromised.

Blumenthal sought a court hearing and a #FederalJudge Leonie M Brinkema agreed, and gave the #USgov 14 days to respond to who had custody of the phones, and explain what they did to them.
