If you love #linux but don't know the #mpv mediaplayer yet, i highly recommend this! Not because it is visually "plain", but because it is highly configurable and real easy to achieve important functions and workflows that other #mediaplayers like #vlc or #kodi just won't. Today i added a "trash file and skip to next" function , triggered by a simple key press while playing back. See for details:

GNOME Replaces Totem Video Player with Showtime

Roll credits on Totem, roll camera on Showtime — GNOME developers have cast a new video player for a staring role in GNOME 49, out in September. Per an upstream change now merged, the aged GTK3 video player Totem has been replaced by newer, fresher and modern GTK4/libadwaita app Showtime in the GNOME Core Apps lineup. Like its predecessor Totem, Showtime’s user-facing name in GNOME 49 will morph into the generic moniker of Video Player (though I’d wager most of us will still call it by its codename, the same way we refer to Files as Nautilus). Showtime may be new in GNOME’s Core :sys_more_orange:

Clapper Media Player Adds New Features, Official Windows Build

A new version of the slick Clapper media player is out with several neat improvements Not newly new, I should say. I hadn’t run a flatpak update in Ubuntu I an age so I only jus noticed an update pending for this nifty little media player. But I figured I’d write about it since it’s been around 10 months since its last major release (save a bug fix release last summer). So what’s new? Well, Clapper 0.8.0 intros a new libpeas-based plugin system in its underlying Clapper library (which other apps can make use of to playback media, as Mastodon client :sys_more_orange:

I'm looking for a way to make a media player on Linux output to a UPnP MediaRenderer device on the local network, in the same way that you can using this Foobar2000 extension: https://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_out_upnp
The point is to be able to browse a local music collection via a laptop and have the sound come out of the hifi system.

I think this might be the last thing I need to entirely replace Windows as the sole OS on my personal laptop.

Any ideas?

Celluloid Media Player Sees First Update This Year

A new version of Celluloid, an open-source media player for Linux, has been released. Celluloid (originally called GNOME MPV, albeit many moons ago) is an MPV-based media player able to leverage many of MPV’s ‘powerful playback capabilities’, but wrapped up within a more modern-looking GUI. The new Celluloid 0.27 releases serves as the the first major update to the app this year. It introduces a number of small changes aimed at improving performance, usability, and the overall appearance. New keyboard shortcuts have been added: Other changes: – In all, a decent set of buffs. Clapper Video Player for Linux Gets First Update in 2 Years

A new version of Clapper, a GTK4-based video player for Linux desktop has been released — the first major update in nearly 2 years. I first wrote about Clapper back in 2021 having been seduced over by its slick user interface (a superficial reason to like a media player, I know), its use of GStreamer, and a small but focused feature set that wasn’t trying to distract me with features I’d never need. Subsequent updates to the app refined and expanded those selling points further and player remained my preferred video player, despite the lack of any major update since :sys_more_orange:

VLC 3.0.19 Released

A new version of VLC, the hugely popular open-source media player, is available to install from the Snap Store. VLC 3.0.19 introduces some noteworthy new features and enhancements, and includes a bunch of bug fixes to correct errant behaviour, resolve stability issues, and improve overall performance while playing or streaming video content. Alas, the most significant new features are Windows-only (for now, anyway). Such as Super Resolution scaling support on compatible NVIDIA and Intel GPUs. This uses AI-assisted upscaling to bump visual quality and image sharpness. Users with compatible hardware can enable the feature via VLC’s Advanced Settings > Output :sys_more_orange:

‘Haruna’ is a Slick Qt-Based Video Player with YouTube Support

Are you a KDE Plasma user looking for a flashy yet featured video player? If so, check out Haruna. I tried it this week and was really impressed by its design, its feature-set, and its ease of use. I’ve written a fair bit about fancy GTK media players like Clapper and Celluloid in the past. But Qt apps? Those not so much. And yet Haruna, an open source video player built using Qt/QML and libmpv, is every inch a match for those (and other) players. And naturally it looks fab on the KDE Plasma desktop: Obviously I’m aware that caring :sys_more_orange:
