  1. @jhaue I think that's exactly what's happening. A lot of what gets presented as "public opinion" is really the result of concentrated money and media influence. You've got Gina Rinehart buying media stakes while backing Hanson financially, and the Murdoch press lining up behind Abbott and the Liberals. That doesn't feel like grassroots politics so much as powerful interests shaping the conversation.
It's a familiar pattern: wealthy resource interests, supportive media outlets, and a fragmented right working together to push the political debate in a particular direction. With Nine/Fairfax one of the few major media groups not fully in that camp, it's hard not to wonder how much genuine diversity of opinion remains in the media landscape.
Stronger media ownership rules and greater transparency around political donations would be a good start. Otherwise, a small group of very powerful players will keep having an outsized influence on the issues that dominate public debate.

  2. @RaymondPierreL3 Yes, sounds like a plan… The good news is the tide is turning. Younger generations are no longer captive to the Murdoch media monopoly and are far more sceptical of the neoliberal script. The real problem is my generation: the over-50s, where a greedy minority benefit and an ignorant majority keep voting to protect them. #auspol #mediadiversity #renationalise

  3. @mativity Brilliant ! People are ditching the old, male-dominated media like Murdoch’s echo chamber and tuning into voices they actually trust — often women, on platforms that aren’t controlled. It’s not just where they get the news, it’s who they choose to hear it from.

  4. 📰 Does a journalist’s name affect whether people read the story?

    Our study found:
    – Black readers were sometimes more likely to click on Black journalists’ stories
    – Hispanic readers were sometimes less likely to click on Hispanic bylines

💡 Byline identity is complex—but diversity in newsrooms still matters.
