Someone visited the @mediaarchaeologylab yesterday who happened to have a photo on their phone of their ancestors who literally rode the Oregon Trail in covered wagons in the 19th century, and I asked to photograph the picture in front of the startup screen for Oregon Trail. Honestly looks like a great 8-bit rendering of the scene on the monochrome Apple IIc.

The theme for the 2025/2026 residency is Counter Computing: Alternative Imaginaries.

Lab director Lori Emerson describes it this way: "We are interested in any form of artistic and/or scholarly practice that engages counter-computational practices, such as glitching, hacking, tinkering, queering, subverting, (un)making and (re)imagining. Through such experimentation, we encourage you to explore how our relation to (and imagination of) technology can be remade to envision alternative pasts, presents and futures."

The lab is asking interested parties to submit a proposal for an up-to-4-week residency that includes full access to the lab and its resources, and logistical support. Residents are expected to produce a public lecture, demo, video, performance, or exhibition as part of the residency. It's done! I have just given print approval for "Medientechnisches Wissen Vol. 1", 2nd edition. The book, originally published on 2017, grew from 306 to 428 pages - mostly because of an additional chapter on #archaeology.

Following the helpful instructions (https://biosrhythm.com/?p=2688) and copy of the Mini vMac emulator provided by @paulrickards I've now got a #MacOS #emulator running on my Pocket CHiP computer.

It does seem to be pretty responsive though the screen size is a tiny bit smaller than the standard Mac displays, which can cause problems. Games seem to run fine, applications work as well as they would under #MinivMac and I just can't get over seeing the "Welcome to Macintosh" on this screen 🥰​

This has been my most extensive translation effort to date. Going through all these elaborations and finding English words for them, particularly for the idiosyncratic expressions, has been a deep dive into the inspiring network of thoughts presented in this text. I am happy it is finally published: “Digitality is imposed upon us! To change this, we should not turn away from it, but look carefully into its transformative power and make operable alternatives such as counter-algorhythms and solidarity-oriented commoning. The aim is a world where profit and property no longer exist, but instead where a cooperative dance – between all the needs posed by our ecosystems, and all the needs of people – becomes practicable. This book is a critical media theory of future-building, modulated by a focus on the potentials of counter-dancing as providing ways to unfold fugitive practices.”

Prof. Dr. Shintaro Miyazaki teaches and researches in the field of media studies (digitality, computation, critique, and social transformation) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. His collaegue Jussi Parikka, professor in digital aesthetics and culture at Aarhus University & Winchester School of Art, says: “Shintaro Miyazaki’s joyful book builds a media theoretical proposal for collective rhythms in computational culture. The mix of wonderful readings and insights offers alternatives to the depressing beat of capitalism, while maneuvering from cybernetics and computational modeling to play, from media archaeology to Marx and digital commons.”

One of my @mediaarchaeologylab #Marchintosh projects has been to rehabilitate this all-in-one Macintosh PowerPC 5260/100, a precursor of the more colorful iMac and eMac all-in-ones. This one has a dead backup battery and has some issues with its SCSI port in the back, but is now bootable and has a lot of great games and other stuff on it like the Newton Connection Kit, which I really want to test out with the Newton we have in the back room. I also anticipate having some fun using my new #TheOldNet wifi modem emulator with it. #mediaarchaeology #mac #macos8
