  1. June 12, 1963 - In the driveway outside his home in Jackson, Mississippi, civil rights leader Medgar Evers, a World War II veteran whose service included France after the Normandy invasion, was shot to death by white supremacist Byron De la Beckwith. De la Beckwith was not convicted until 1994 after an extensive investigation by Jackson, Mississippi’s Clarion-Ledger newspaper. He was tried and acquitted twice by all-white juries, members of which had been influenced by the Ku Klux Klan. Following one of the trials, then-Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett stood by Beckwith's side and shook his hand.

  25. This is the story that got me curious. They're celebrating his life this week. In the article, one of the last people to see Evers alive describes their final moments together, discussing the dangers of civil rights activism (meaning the violent fascist white supremacists, exactly the kind who are now killing politicians & driving cars into peaceful protesters).
